My buddy and had just found a 12 foot lund flat bottom duck boat. Camo and the whole works. Since we got the boat in the middle of the summer we decided to take the boat on a fishing trip to test its seaworthiness. We were having an excellent time catching wallys and perch and an occasional Budweiser. We were off in our own little world having a blast and soaking in the sun. Next thing we know, we are pitching so far to our port side that out minnow bucket and beers fly over the gunwale and land in the water. Just as we regain balance and consciousness of what was happening another wake hits again from the same side. As we gain our composure and flipped the switch for the bilge, we saw two boats flying by at full speed - one with lights and sirens!

Come to find out a beautiful wood hull speed boat full of high school kids and beer were trying to see if they could elude the Game, Fish and Parks Officer by speeding around the LAKE!! (By the way - Running from the G,F&P on a lake doesn't work!)

A few minutes later the officer (and a few forlorn looking teens in cuffs) came back to us and apologized for his own behavior trying to thwart the high schoolers' actions. He also had the driver of the speed boat apologize.

Moral of the story - Don't put your cell phone on your lap when fishing in a flat bottom!!!!

Second moral of the story - Make sure you get the kid's name. I now have a beautiful new cell phone courtesy of a wealthy doctor in town!!:D

cell phones should always be in a waterprrof case nd in your pocket (better--your life vest pocket). You can by a case at marine shops for $20, or a box of 150 cases for $3 at the grocery store. You need to get to the phone if you fall overboard and are separated from your boat. Tell th efolks back home you have ot leave it off for safety reasons. teh real reason: you go out on the water to get away from the things on shore.

Re: A wet day of fishing!!

sounds like you have some prety cool cops around your area. he didnt have to come back and apologize......................

it would have been my luck i would have had a few open containers in sight and gotten searched and checked over real good

sometimes justice is served...here in ok the cops are stretched a lil thin so we have some un-courteous boaters pull those kinds of stunts sometimes.....

i put my cellphone and cigarettes in a plastic dry foods container (dont know exactly what its called) ....that way if my boat sinks or capsizes i can swim over get my lil dry/floating container---swim to the bank and have a cigarette while i call someone to come help me :D

Re: A wet day of fishing!!

I have personally dunked about 3 cell phones off the boat. I was on call one weekend, and decided to go on the boat anyways. Well, I was anchored at the island we frequent, went to step off the swim platform (cell phone clipped to trunks), and bam! Over my head in the water. My brand new Tampa Bay Rays hat, my freshly opened Corona, a pack of smokes, a lighter, and my cell phone all soaked. I felt like personally driving to the Humminbird office, asking for the calibration tech, and knocking his lights out! That darn thing said 2 feet!

Well, really it was 2 feet, but some (expletives) that like to go WOT 10 feet in front of an anchored boat knocked my anchor loose and put me on top of a huge hole. Nobody's fault but my own, but I sure did feel like someone was to blame. Maybe that guy laughing his @$$ off on the shore. .
