Lot's of good debating minds here at iboats so I thought I'd try something. There are no right or wrong answers to this scenario.Just individual survival theories. It's very much like the concept of the movie Castaway with a twist of Barbara Walters.Nuff said. Here goes.

You're lost at sea on a small boat in the West Pacific and it capsises, sinks, and you manage to swim to the safety of a remote and small island with just a few palm trees. If you could begin your quest for survival with just one item, (listed below) that you managed to retrieve from your small boat before it capsised, what would that item be and why.Sorta lame ,but I'm bored. Here's the list.

1 fishing pole rigged with lure
1 flashlight with new batteries
1 signal flare/with striker
1 canteen full of drinking water
1 50 ft piece of 5/8" rope
1 week food supply

Why do I get the feeling that this is a trick question? Oh well, here I leap!
1 canteen full of drinking water.
-I'll last a lot longer with having drinkable water in case I need to last awhile. I need to last until that Hunk a burnin' love comes to rescue me. Hee hee.
Oh, Hi honey! Of course I mean you.
Bassy ;)

Food, because I can drink coconut milk and a week's supply is long enough to find other food.

I'd drown before I ever get that far though, because I can't swim. :p

I'd go with the fishing rod.

Salt water can be purified with a little imagination,
fish "can" be eaten raw,
if you don't want to eat raw, find a hot hock thats been in the sun all day, it'll cook it soon enough.....might be a bit dry.

The fishing pole. The magic cooler of everlasting beer will float to shore. With a fishing pole and beer, screw rescue! ;)

Assuming the palms are coconuts they can provide both food and drink, as well as shelter.

Next priority is probably fire. The flashlight reflector can focus sunlight well enough to start the fire.

With food, drink, shelter and fire there is time to apply a bit of creativity to satisfaction of other needs and improvement of my situation.

So: the flashlight.

Re: a "what if" scenario

ill take the food, it will give me some time to assess the situation before hunger makes it desperate.
1 canteen of water in the west pacific is not enough for survival. with a fishing pole and my luck all the fish will be on vacation in the east pacific. the flash light would most likly have those green 2 minute life govt issue batteries. trying to swim with 50ft of rope I would prolly drown myself and the signal flare would most likly misfire cause some chinese assy plant used inferior water proofing.
its amazing how many plant leaves are crushable to obtain water. but with my luck I would land on the only uknown island that happened to have a large unknown Komodo Dragon population and be lunch anyway :)

I would row ashore in the boat.....Because I've hung out here long enoufgh to not forget the plug.

Actually I'm leaning towards the Fishing rod...Not so much for the fish catching lure but for some reason that 200 yards of monofiliment appeal's to me. Seem's like it could come in usful.

Re: a "what if" scenario

1 fishing pole rigged with lure-Nope, wrong lure for the Pacific.

1 flashlight with new batteries-Nope, won't be wandering around at night.

1 signal flare/with striker-Nope, did not have flare on boat, illegal.

1 50 ft piece of 5/8" rope-Nope, why would I want a piece of rope for, to hang myself when it got rough?

1 week food supply-Nope, one week would mean 3 days, maybe.

1 canteen full of drinking water-Now here we go, this is what we need.
Drinking water, not only that, but take the strap off the canteen and use it to shimmy up them palm trees to collect coconuts.

Set an ambush and when the prey comes by, swat it with the canteen, more food.

Find some small branches, twigs and whatnot and then find a couple of them magic rocks to start a fire to cook beforementioned swatted food.

Me thinks I could go for a little bit that way.

Food swatted by canteen, coconuts for liquid and twigs and whatnot for fire and you have the trees for shelter, me thinks you would be good to go till they found you. :D

Re: a "what if" scenario

I would take the fishing pole. As the others have said you can purify water if you are creative enough. Everything else on the list is consumable. (well, except the rope.) To me the fishing pole is the only item that can obtain a never-ending supply of another necessary item.

gimme the rope---I learned this watching "Pirates of the Carribean" - after three days of no food & water, that rope's gonna start lookin' mighty friendly...

no, the flashlight will have parts that can be used as a signal mirror

Water!

You can last a lot longer without food than without water. The canteen full of water will give you a jump-start in getting your act together. You're going to have to find a source of food and water anyway, and figure out a way to make fire. You can go about a month without food, indefinitely without fire, but only a few days without water. You'd lose your mind seeing the Pacific Ocean all around you and craving a drink.
