HAHA Matt! We fly fish stripers all the time down here on the middle bay. It's a blast! You and the family enjoy yourselves.

Re: aaaand so it begins - starcraft rebuild

I'm back from the deep blue sea. We had a great trip on Cape Cod. Off topic, but here are some pics....

my nicest fish of the trip:

My brother John and my Dad waded out on a bar and got stranded by the incoming tide. They made it back fine - but took some water over the top of their waders. We all had a good laugh. Here's John recovering:

Ok, boat stuff. You guys will cringe, but I threw together a temporary console and put the old bench back in and took the boat out on Narragansett bay for Sunday and Monday. The bite is on and we got into some good numbers. I wasn't crazy about doing it, but I wouldn't have another chance to take dad out until next year. The deck was completely sealed in - so there was no harm done. Dad and John in the stern:

John in the bow:

I'm actually glad I got in out on the water. I learned a few important things:

1) The Johnson starts and runs just fine. Check that off the list

2) It's going to be tight around the big console. It may not be practical to mount a t-top after all. We'll see.

3) I really like how deep it is at the bow. The casting deck might not go back in. I may wind up putting just enough of it in to make a floor for my anchor locker.

Now that I've had my fun, it's back at it!

Wow, those are some NICE fish. I love how high sided and roomy that boat is. Just great for fishing. I agree that you might want to leave out the casting deck. I took one of my rear jump seats out one time for fishing and it never went back in. I've been debating about taking the other one out.

And by the way, the first time we took my boat out, we sat on beach chairs! We wanted to make sure we were happy with it before we put the money into the interior. I punched it and my dad fell out of his.

Thanks Ezmo. I'm a nut for striper fishing. Said it before - the fly rod makes them twice as fun.

Beach chairs. Love it. Funny you should say that. My dad has a habit of punching it whenever he feels like it - regardless of who is in the boat or where they are at the time. My brother John and I took a few diggers. All in good fun.

I used 2-part epoxy resin (got in online from Us Composites). After cutting the individual pieces, I applied two coats to the underside and edges. Once the deck was riveted down, I used a combination of the same epoxy resin and fiberglass cloth to seal the top. It's a popular method among the members of this forum and I can see why. I expect excellent performance from this new deck. It is a lot of work, but worth it.

2 hour rule applies. But who am I to talk? I've been one sandwich shy of a picnic for awhile now.

Ok back to official BOAT insanity....

Nice pics! That console worked out good AND gave ya some valuable feedback! Man, I need to splash mine!!!

I also admit..back in Cali with my 17 foot 35 horse (evinrude Lark) I had my pops on the boat (couldnt swim) and used to gun her every now and then just to let him know who was the cpt!!! lol

Striper or Stripper... Ether one could be correct, a good Striper will strip line like nobodys business.:)

Re: aaaand so it begins - starcraft rebuild

I spent the weekend with lower unit issues. I'd posted in the johnson/evinrude forum last year about a clunk that was diagnosed as clutch dog problems. Naturally, it hasn't gotten any better - I picked up a used lower unit off craigslist and swapped them this weekend. There was a good bit of frankensteining between the two units - the impeller was new last fall off the original - swapped that over to the replacement. Also, I swapped the cover/seal and bearings that are under the impeller. The cover on the replacement unit was nearly corroded through (replace those zincs, people).

It's pumping like nobody's business. Tonight we'll see how it actually works/sounds. I'm not planning on running this Johnson forever. A repower is definitely planned, but probably not until next year. So, here's hoping this unit gets me through at least this season.

I have read ALL of the information and tried to view the photos, but your photo album does not open for me except for 2 photos neither of them a boat.

I am working on my aluminum boat too with a similar situation. Not battery acid, just what material to use as a foam type material.

Re: aaaand so it begins - starcraft rebuild

Sorry about that, Lliam. I just changed the settings on my boat album - so hopefully it'll work if you try it again. I'll send you a pm with the link also. Let me know if you still have trouble.

I shoulda just gone with photobucket like everyone else. Picassa doesn't let me imbed the photos in this thread - even though has that option. When I try to do it, all that happens is gobbledy gook where the photo should be in the thread.

Update on the boat: more problems! I took the boat out two nights ago to give the lower unit a shakedown. The replacement lower unit does not go "CLUNK" at random. In fact, no clunk at all. NOW I'm getting a rattle in the powerhead at about 3/4 throttle. Haven't had time to look into it.

Also - some rivets popped where the floor meets the side of the boat. I haven't even really pounded the boat - ok maybe a little. Apparently, I need longer rivets. Time to drill them out and replace. Annoying as hell - but better to figure these things out before painting the floor.
