Originally posted by Nos4r2:
I quit smoking back in September using nicotine gum. I feel loads better for it-but I'm now addicted to the damn gum! Anyone got any tips for getting off the stuff?
I quit smoking using the same meathod, but also had difficulty droping the gum.
My doc told me the gum was as harmfull as the cigs, but to stay on the gum, and keep trying to cut the dosage.
After almost a year of gum, here is how i finally did it, NOS;
First, note the fact that you are no longer smoking cigs, and that is BY FAR the "biggie".
Don't ever pick up another one, because you already know what will happen.
Second, you have to switch to the lowest MG gum today, and switch to the wally world genreric gum...It tastes nasty, but the effect is identical (and this should be all you are after)
Get used to the lower dosage before attempting to ween yourself further.
Third, I then picked a "day of commitment", just like I did to quit cigs, to cut the gum in half.
Also, I took longer before giving into the urge to break-out the gum.
Fourth, I Suplemented the nic gum with a sugar-free gum i could stomach..The stuff is as nasty as nic gum, but just as the nic gum, you get accustomed to it.
I did not allow myself ANY nic gum, until i have chewed the regular for a while (at least long enough to loose all flavor--yuk).
Fifth; make another "comittment day" to quarter the gum.
After about 90 days of quarter dosage, you will want to pick another day to just quit altogether.
It werked for me. I have been off the smokes since Jan1,2000.

And let me just congratulate you for taking the plunge in the first place.
Don't give up now. You're almost home,NOS!

Nos,

You have already crossed the toughest bridge to quitting, the decision to no longer smoke.

At this point, it is mind over matter. Never give up!!! My dad died of lung cancer this past October, the day before his 65th birthday. He always believed he was tougher than cigs. Well, needless to say, he was not. I can tell you that my entire life I heard him say the same old crap that many say when in denial, "when God decides to take you, there is nothing you can do." Well, the day before my dad died, while he still had a bit of coherient thought, I had never seen anybody so afraid of anything as he was of dying. This is the first time I have given that day any amount of thought, though I new this day would come. Sorry if I got off track, but thanks for allowing it.

Again Nos, just believe you can win, do everything possible to succeed, and know you have my prayers in your fight.

I guess it's better to have the gum addiction than the cig addiction.
