Ablative paint?

The AF paint on the bottom of my boat has been on for years, and it still looks ok, just wearing in the usual spots (rollers, bunks, etc)

Now, I'm assuming its ablative paint, as it comes off on my finger if I rub it, especially when its wet.

Can I just lightly sand whats there and reapply a couple coats?

Its Interluxe BottomKote XXX an ablative paint?

Hello there..

Bottomkote is not really an " ablative " as such.

Your talking the XX9 series ?

I'm not overly familiar with all the different types. The BottomKote XXX was the one that appeared more newbie friendly. I could be completely wrong and the XXX is not what I need.

Most of hte paint is fine, I just wanted to touch up some areas, but I can't find the copper colour, so I'm going to have to go with a different colour and paint over the old stuff.

"copper color" ?

uh..are you sure its " Bottomkote " ?

Are you sure its not VC-17 ( which is IMHO the best stuff on the market today )?

just be sure the paints are compatible...without major prep.

Sorry, maybe I was confusing. I am asking if bottokote will go over what is there.

The existing paint on the boat is a copper colour, I have no idea if its VC-17, it was applied prior to me owning the boat.

Here's a crappy picture that I have:

Take an acetone rag and wipe a spot.. If it looks like a copper penny then its more then likely vc-17, in which I would stick with. No prep needed for recoat ( just clean ) and use a foam roller.

IF your stuck on Bottomkote then you will most likely have to prep for repaint ( I believe its 80 grit-ish ).

I personally like vc-17.
