Abnormal Timer Base wear??

Hey guys been having some intermittent ignition issues with my V4 130Hp. Problem is intermittent, and only happens after a 30 min run. Idles and runs great at first, then warms up real good and acts up. I have caught it dropping spark on cylinder one in the driveway, and cylinder three also, at different times.

Flywheel and magnets look beautiful. My stator is a bit under spec for resistance, as well as idle voltage so I am changing it. Timer base checked out (but cant test it during fault due to being on the water.) Anyways, here is a pic of the timer base. It seems pretty worn out inside, and there is one place where it seems to be worn through the plastic to the magnet. Do you guys think this could be a culprit as well? I do not want to have to pull the flywheel again for a long time, so I think I want to change it just in case.

See the wear up towards the top? The upper bearing is solid and has very little play. I do not think this wear is due to shaft play. You can also see the "grooves" that have been cut just past the metal contacts. I guess that happens from the magnets in the flywheel slowly pulling bits of metal from the contacts until they shear into the timer base.

Not unusual for ignition components to fail when they get many, many hours of use on them. Usually the failure pattern is that they work when the engine is cold (just started.) Then they start to fail when the engine warms up to normal operating temps. Best to do your testing on any weak part when the engine is well warmed up, as you may find the component tests ok when it's cold. I like the cranking voltage output test. If it won't meet that spec-replace it.

There is no contact between the flywheel magnets and the timer base.---------What you see is likely normal here.

As always, thanks guys. I just cant seem to pinpoint the ignition issue because it wont get hot enough in the driveway. Guess I could take all my tools onto the water, but bleh.

EMD, the cranking voltage tests all passed, from stator all the way to power pack. BUT, the resistance of the stator was lower than what was called for. The manual also states 180v at orange wires on power pack when running, and I was somewhere at 135v. I think the old wrapped stator is on her way out the back door. Got a fresh CDI one to replace her. This timer base looks worn too. Only a matter of time. Guess I will just change her out also.

Thanks for the input guys.

id try the new stator and see how you get on, those timing bases are very expensive and ive seen a lot worse condition ones than your one that still are functioning perfectly.
I dont like pulling a flywheel too but if you torque it down to spec you shouldnt have much trouble at all popping it again.
Its when people guess the aount that it goes horribly wrong

Yea you are right about that brother. I bought a certified used Timer base for $65. Figured it couldn't hurt. And I am making an "educated" guess, so not just throwing parts. I plan on keeping the motor for 5 years so putting in fresh ignition components wouldn't be a bad idea...............
