Re: Abolish Minimum Wage

SoulWhiner, for a person with such religious conviction, you have no compassion what so ever for your fellow human beings. The longer I live, the more I become at odd with such mentality.

In a Civilized Society, when a member fail to compete to make a living due to what ever reason, we must lend a hand. This act of kindness is what defines us as Civilized. Either we progress forward together or die a short life.

Secondly, you fail to see the importance of Minimum Wage. The idea here is to entice the welfare recipients to join the work force. By creating the minimal standard, more will join the work force and contribute to society in the form of taxes. Of course you would rather have them sit at home feeding off Welfare right? And then you will complain about that to. Very typical. Actually you would rather have them walk over to a corner and die peacefully.

Wanna bet on it?

On second thought, I take that bet back. Several months ago I made a bet with a French dude by the name of Pierbridge. Never to be seen again. I take it he is back home in France. 8)

Re: Abolish Minimum Wage

Our local football stadium needed the pressbox expanded/remodelled.

In order to do this, they had to install an elevator to be ADA complient.

That elevator cost about one million dollars of taxpayer money for the off chance someone in a wheelchair needed to go to the pressbox. The rest of the stadium was ADA complient, many areas and ramps for wheelchair access.

This is where the ADA went too far.

But, ya gotta admit, many businesses have made big bucks by making things ADA ok.

Also, the EPA mandates cost many businesses millions of dollars, but it also creates lots of jobs.

Anyway, the minimum wage thing is a joke. There isnt anyway someone should try to make a living off minimum wage. I can only guess that less than 5% of workers make minimum wage. I would think most make significantly more than minimum.

So my point is, arguing about minimum wage is moot.

I kinda agree, raise the minimum wage and the employer will just raise prices.
however we need most our social programs to remain a civilized robust nation.
I do think there needs to be some sweeping changes but our carreer politicians wont do it. another arguement for 2 lifetime term limits and no retirements.
pure capitalism wont work, pure socialism wont work. both have been failures.
trust me,I dont like most of Chavez's policies in VE.
however a good friend of mine that was almost legally blind had some surgeries performed in Cuba by Cuban opthomologists last november and now has 20/20 vision without glasses. wanna know how much it cost him ?
Chavez just opened one of the largest childrens cardio hospitals in the world, wanna know how much it costs?
the US navy retired me with no diagnosis other than an arthritic condition and I went to portsmouth navel hospital over 10 years. wanna know what country I was in that finally diagnosed it and how much it cost me?
13 blood tests,2 sets of Xrays and 2 dr visits.
225 dollars and I have no insurance in VE.
however I do have a diagnoses and brought all the records back, only cost me 195 dollars to have it confirmed and that was after the CHAMPUS pay.
I have 3 leagally blind cousins in Florida. without the ADA they would be sitting on the porch blind. all have jobs and though some "horrors" social programs 2 have glasses that they can wear for periods of time so they can see.

If people are so stupid to get into that situation, where is it written that it is my responsibilty to take care of them, huh?

Thats true. I too an Economics class that was based around a lot of this stuff. Economics of Discrimination or something like that. I don't remember the numbers, but you definately can't live without help on minumum wage. The poverty line is a joke too. To live at that level you have to cut stuff pretty thin. To the point of not being able to even nourish yourself properly.

Actually Boom, the world is not perfect like you and I. The bottom line is, any mishap to my neighbors will directly or indirectly effect me. We live in a colse environment remember? This is the reason why we should lend a hand. The unintended consequences maybe 100 times bigger down the road. Kill the HIV virus before it become AIDS.

Re: Abolish Minimum Wage

I bill marinais I contract for 45 an hour, the public 75 an hour, if ya want it now its 150 an hour. I stay 6-10 weeks behind almost year round.
its amazing how many fools will pay the 150 an hour.
call me at the house and cry that everyone says 3 weeks to look at it and Ill tell ya for 150 an hour Ill look at it today. it gets funny.
the hours used to get long but now I limit myself to 35 hours or so a week.
I just sold a chunk o property and am weighing my retirement options :)
but in the past 8 years contracting as a tech has been good.
no real overhead,ho shop,no employees,no recievables nor accounts.
when I am done the marina pays me and if they get paid aint my problem.
my boat is a write off,my vehicle is a write off,my DSL is a write off.
its amazing how much is a write off.
and to top it off I just paid for a 175 Etec in cash
yep I am a master yamaha tech but I am gonna dog the pee outta an etec.
and the dealer I bought it from I have worked for and with since about 89 and I told him, I am gonna see if the Etec will break.
but I never quite got around to going to college, my cats and the horse forgive me.
the peacock bass I catch at Lake Guri VE dont seem to mind.
I leave for a tarpon/snook trip oct 7 back on the 16th and a jungle trip dec 17th.
be back jan 25th.
so I really dont care which politician is posturing today. minimum wage is a joke.
it comes down to self discipline and self motivation.
many of my classmates that went to college still make less than 50K a year, I have a sister with 2 masters that makes about 40K a year her husband has 2 masters and makes about 38 k a year.

Well GQ,

You are living in dream land. Live in a big city like Chicago, Detroit, LA for several years and then maybe you'll be qualified to speak. You sound like a bleeding heart ultra liberal that is out of touch or uniformed.
I know a welfare agent that presented a job offer to a welfare recipient. The recipient replied " hell that's only 50 cents an hour more then I make on welfare". This took place in the early sixties. 50 cents went a long way then. Did you know that the welfare crowd in Chicago would take the train to Wisc. to collect there too. Don't blend welfare reform with minimal wage. To seperate issuses. Genius

True they are very seperate entities, but they play off easch other a lot. If it were still the 60's Firestar I'd agree with you, but here at least you can only collect Welware for so many years in your lifetime. So YOU do have to get a job at some point. At which time minumum wage is necessary. As it has been said most people make more than that wage...........but if it wasnt there, I'd have to think that a lot of employers would take advantage. Maybe I'm wrong...............regardless its a moot point for most.

Your Gov. came up with a good plan for welfare. The rest of the country should follow Wisconsin's lead. That has been the general concensus.
The only problem here is that some people are trying to redefine minimal wage. Minimal wage< Living wage. Minimal wage is NOT living wage. KISS

Does Mexico have a minimum wage?

I did not think so, and they are rolling in the money.....right?

That would be one way to get industry to come back to the US....allow GM and other corporations to pay workers here in the US 25 cents a day to build $40,000 automobiles. I bet GM would lower their auto prices down to maybe $800 for a nice SUV. I can't wait.

For those failing to see, the above was written with a bit of sarcasm.

SW, are you a GM lobbyist?

Why should I pay for someone else's poor life choices? Why should the Federal government pass laws to make life easier for people who make poor life choices? What constitutional authority do they have to do that? Why should the economy subsidize activities like unplanned parenthood?

Have you ever been poor, do you know what it's like to have to choose between buying a gallon of gas for the car or a gallon of milk for the baby? ,,,,,, never mind just not worth it

Your another genius. When was the last time minimal wage was an issue with the auto industry? They have UNIONS! Daahhh! Think before you speak. Your sarcasm speaks volumes and it doesn't quit.

First off if you are so poor as to have to choose between a gallon of gas and a gallon of milk for the baby, you never should have made a baby in the first place and .....well......what the hell are you doing with a car? These irresponsible people that get themselves into these positions should be chastised. Not felt sorry for. I have seen 15 year old mothers, I hate using such a nice name for what they truely should be called, with green cards (that you the taxpayer pays for) have 3 children listed on them.
I have two children. I would have loved to have more. I could only AFFORD two children. Hence, you can figure this one out, I only had two.
Making babies when you should be getting an education is a problem in itself and does not have anything to do with minimum wage. There are to many social programs which by some of the users are concidered "entitlements". Minimum wage is a seperate issue.
