86 mariner 75hp 4cyl. runs goods, but been sitting for about 6yrs. wanted to spray some product down the carbs (2). dont have a "local" boat shop so i went to auto parts store and bought marvel mystery oil to mix with gas for carbon... also bought a gunk carb cleaning spray. the only question i have is that when i spray it in the upper carb.. it will idle down which is normal because of the cleaning product, but when i spray bursts into the lower carb it will idle up... why would one carb idle down and almost stall when spraying bursts but why would the other carb idle up while spraying?

It does absolutely no good to spray the throats of a carb (except to clean the throat). They need to be disassembled, thoroughly cleaned, and reassembled with new gaskets and needle and seat.

Agree on rebuild and after allmost having a heart attack looking at some carb cleaner prices, settled on Gallon of Gunk parts cleaner with a little wire basket encluded. Only one carb at a time, but got them squeaky clean after about a day and a half each and now she purrs like a 70hp Evinrude should. I think it cost about 22 bucks and probably good for another few years as it's in a metal paint style can.

Good luck

Jeff, I agree with the other posters. To answer your question about why it idles up when spraying into lower carb, maybe lower carb has clogged idle jets, and is running lean. Hence the speed up.

BTW - be careful with that suff, it has no oil in it and can make the motor run too lean.

Don't know about the ones you mentioned but outboard carbs are very simple.

yes, simple, a float and valve, seat, some jets, needle valve for adjustments not much else. One of the gurus over in the johnson forums has a good tip, he uses a piece of copper wire strand from a stranded electrical wire to clean out all the tiny passage ways and orifice holes. That combined with some compressed air.
