when motor is running in barrel of water it will pop out of forward after bout 20-30 seconds. Reverse is fine. My question is that since reverse is good can i just turn the clutch dog around. Im under the impression the the forward side is worn or rounded. Im not sure of anything else that would cause this. when it pop out of gear you just hear a small click and nothing else.

Nope..It's a round gear. Chances are you need to slightly adjust your shift linkage. Then you will have both gears properly working.

There is a small inspection plate on the midsection with 2 screws in it. Take it off. The linkage is right there. Usually one of the two linkage bolts is loose or stripped. Which ever is your problem is an easy fix. If one is loose, pull it out completely. Use need nose plyers to hold the linkage on the loose end and move your shifter handle untill it's in properly. There is a groove it the linkage that the bolt should run across holding it in place...Then replace the bolt. If the bolt is stripped, use a new one. If the connector is stripped use a slightly bigger bolt, around the same length, and ease it in slowly.

While you have that upper shift rod disconnected, make sure that there is no up and down slp in it, whatsoever. Often times, things on the top end get loose and start problems with the bottome end. I'm not sure about your particular model, but a lot of these motors, particularly the larger ones will have two clamping screws on the shifter and this is where you can make your shift linkage adjustments. There is a slot head, and a hex head. Loosen both up and slide the hex head toward the top of the longated hole that it's in.

Go ahead and try all the "easy" fixes. You might get lucky. But if it is jumping out of gear in the barrel, unless it is mighty loose you might as well face reality. The clutch dog is probably very worn out and probably the forward gear too.

Fixing one thing without fixing everything is a waste of time, money, and parts which will only become harder and harder to find.

Sorry to have to rain on your parade like this.

it's rarely the linkage... but try adjusting at the shifter, that's the only place... I forget on the 10 if you can reverse the clutch dog or not. I think you can. I did it this week on a '76 6hp and it's running great now.

I recently worked on a 1956 10hp, and the clutch dog is reversible on that one. However on mine, it was rounded on both sides so I had to replace it. Found a new one on Ebay, and by the time I paid shipping, it was $70. Better than the Johnnyrude dealer - they wanted $120.

That same clutch dog (377458) was used on many other motors including all of the 9.5 models. It is superseded by 393879 and 329795 as well. There are usually a couple of them on Ebay at any given time if you search the part numbers.
