Re: ? about hrs.on a boat

I doubt there is a uniform answer to that, I put on about 5 hrs a week but my brother runs his boat 20 to 30 hrs per week.

I would also hazard a guess that 352 hrs in 26 years doesn't add up (13 hrs per year!!). The hr meter could have been fitted at anytime within that 26 years.

If you are worried about wear & tear, better to do some tests including compression etc.

Aldo

Re: ? about hrs.on a boat

I know guys that put on 300-400 hours a year, yea even here in WI and its short season. While I may take my boat out 20-25 times, I only run the big motor about 1 hour per outing. So I only put 25 hours on it a year. My uncle uses his boat about 5 days a year, running the big motor about 10 hours a year.

In 1999 Morse Controls (Morse, Hynautic, Aqua Power) did a survey and found that the average in the US was 50 hours per year for recreational boats.

In the last 3 years my hour meter, 130 hrs. I mostly fish so alot of time spent w/o motor running, except for some trolling.

how bout an iboats poll - get enough response could be interesting. I estimate 26 outings/year at 2 hours per = 52 hours.

bet there's a significant difference between inboards & outboards.

Re: ? about hrs.on a boat

Agree with Dunaruna, do compression tests. I could be wrong but researching diesel vs. gas, besides upkeep, it seems that sitting(not accumulating hours on your engine) can be worse than running it. Low hour diesel engines that only run short fast trips are much more suseptible to failure than engines that are run at cruising speeds with many more hours on them.

Would gas engines be the same way? When looking at boats, I rarely put much stake in how many hours are on the engine(unless it is billed as brand new). There are just too many factors that can effect how good of shape it is in. Maintainance, winterizing, load when run, RPM's run, how long? I am sure you could find 2 boats with same engines, one with 200 hours on it and one with 1000 hours on it, and no doubt have the 1000 hour engine perform better than someone not taking care of the low mileage one.
