Are you working on lost shine? You might be wise to watch a video or 2 about buffer use. Visuals are better than describing it in text.
Yes work in the shade, a cool day is best.
Never run the buffer onto an edge, always off. Don't hit metal pieces, they can grab your wheel and injure you. If you get to a spot you can't wheel, put some product on a towel & do it by hand.
Do a section, then polish and wax after ward. If you get the results you want compound the whole dang thing, then polish the whole thing, then wax the whole thing. Then you saved hundreds of dollars on a detailer.
After you are done you will find drops of wax and compound in nooks and crannies the next few times you look. Just keep wiping, you'll get them eventually.
My boat was kind of bad so I wet sanded it this spring. It was so worth it.

As NHguy said. I also wet sanded the whole boat before buffing it out. I would try a small place that isn't too conspicuous to start with to make sure you like the results. I sanded with 600 and paper first and the 1000 to finish. Yes it lots of work but the results were well worth it. Then I used a buffer with Maguires diamond cut. Then waxed it all. And the shade is much better. Compound doesn't dry as fast and much easier on you..LOL
