I screwed up and removed the shift pivot screw from my 1988 85hp force.it seems that the smart thing to do is dissasemble the gearcase and make sure it is put together right.i have a shop manual but before i do this i have a few questions.1-how difficult is this?I have done some small repairs ,replaced water pump, starter etc.and have some mechanical experence on cars but have never dissasembled a gearcase on a outboard.2-where can i get a lower unit seal kit?3-am i going to need any special tools and if so are they going to cost more than if i took it to a repair shop? any other advice?
all help will be greatly appriciated
thanks Troy

Re: ? about shift pivot screw repair

If you remove gear case, waterpump, then the large plate under the pump, you can see the bellcrank that the screw goes thru. May not need seals. the plate is sealed with an o-ring. I would check the drive shaft and shift shaft seals after you take it apart. If the gear case was in neutral when you removed the screw, you may be able to disconnect shift rod, wiggle the rod and insert screw.
