1969 v4 johnson on bass boat
ok motor pops miss's and somethimes runs wot great but mid range sputters and other times mid low range good and wot hardly runs at all. always idles fine. carbs are clean, cant find air leak in case, changed plugs and cleaned fuel pump, no clog or kink in fuel line or carbs. good spark, im sure its running lean as plugs come out dry when not running well. and wet when running better. low speed needle does next to nothing when adj. and primer is tight and when running bad. if i pump primer while motor is sputtering there is no change in sputting. what should the float hight be? about to get rid of this thing. spent to many days at the lake messing with this thing

You say the carbs are clean, did you do a complete rebuild? Pull the welsch plugs, clean all passages? The float should be level with the top of the carb body.

thanks for the help i really need the insight!!!! is the welsh plug in the float bowl like a silver tab cover about 1/2" round? If so i did not know i could take that apart. carb cleaner went through every passage and came out the correct passage vey well, didnt see any sign if dirt varnish or clogs. whats weird is it will run so inconsistantly. totaly fine then 30 sec later crap.

Yes it is. Bits of junk too big to go through the passages can rattle around and intermittently clog a passage causing erratic running.

Re: about to dump my 115hp v-4 not running well

Just what i was thinking but was spinning my wheels Trying to figure it out what was clogging intermediately when I know Alot about building motocross and race engines but not marine. So after a few attempt I get very frustrated knowing what happening in the system but having to go home work on it then water test it with good results for 30 sec.

Also I keep leaning to the fuel pump or supply as all cyl "seem" to run rich or lean when checking spark plug color. Not just one or top or bottom that plug color changes it's all unless both carbs have crap in them.

I ran it one day and the very next day all these problems started...

Thank you , thank you for any input again

Don't fret about it, a two-stroke is a two-stoke whether it's an outboard or a bike just follow your nose, you'll solve it.

You said "didnt see any sign if dirt - - ". It is the crud that you don't see that can foul the carb.

have you changed all the fuel lines on the motor yet? the old lines dont like new gas and bits of rubber break free plugging the carb needles so clean today can be blocked tomorrow

Yup, changed all fuel lines... Are the Welsch plugs reusable, do u need a tool to take them out? Or just get them out and replace them?

Carbs have zero crud inside and I checked piston and they still have the machining marks on them, rings and cyl walls look like motor is a few years old

The Welch plugs are not reusable. They have a domed shaped to them when new and are tapped into place. Once tapped in, the convex dome collapses inward, thus expanding the plug and creating a seal.

To remove, drill a small hole in the center, then use an awl or some other instrument to pry the plug out. DO NOT drill in to far! If so, you will drill into the carb body. Only drill in far enough to create a hole in the disc.

Re: about to dump my 115hp v-4 not running well

So it's not carbs, maybe an air leak or..... Hmm something making it randomly run lean. But at same time carbs are getting fuel and all passages are clear. Almost like needle in float sticks but not on all Four carbs... I'm going to check pickup inside if tank but primer is tight and messing with choke while running doesn't Change anything, but if spark plugs are very dry and clean very lean..but I see fuel dumping into the reed cage while wot... Hmm what else would make all cyl lean

I don't want to sell it but I can't figure it out and don't want to buy alot of psrts shooting in the dark. I know the CFO was changed last year...
