About to fill up with 10% ethanol for the first time- how to prepare?

How old is the boat? Most likely your fuel additives have kept the system clear already. Ever use sea foam? does the same thing.

Not if you have been using Stabil - that stuff sucks and really leaves deposits. Leave the magical snake oil out of the tank. Gasoline comes from the refineries with stabilizers in it, there is no reason to add magic oil or ethanol treatment. Put it in the tank and burn it, same as your car.

Why 93 octane? Unless you have a hopped-up motor, it's unnecessary. Or are you just trying to make sure you compensate for any loss of octane in the old fuel?

Depends on the motor. The 3.0L's really like 92 + octane

What? I have a local repair guy here that swears by the stuff. Is there any good info backed up by science anywhere for or against?

some people don't like additives. Some say E10 never goes bad. Some say man will never fly.

I've got some additives that I use to keep away elephants - works like a charm ;)

Some say that E10 will knock up your wife, kick your dog and goes bad if you look at it ;) After having it here for 20+ years, I'm not one of them.

Not quite the same as in your car. That in your car is burned continuously and does not have time to do bad things to your tank, hoses, and engine. Unless you have a small tank and burn to near empty often there is a big difference.

Put the 93 octane in and run the boat I doubt if anything will happen. It sounds like they stabilized the gas and by adding higher octane you should be ok.
I bought boats that sat 2 or 3 years and never had a problem with the gas.

Yes, ethanol will tend to dissolve old varnish, so I'd carry some extra fuel filters. If your fuel hoses are old you might want to replace those, too. IMO, I don't see the need to drain the old fuel or fill with high octane unless your motor normally requires it. No need to go nuts about it. As for Sta-Bil CAUSING problems? No way. Boaters and classic car guys have been using the stuff for at least 50 years. I use it at winter layup every year.

Unfortunately, where ethanol is concerned, it's a debate that never ends. I won't say it's never caused an issue (I know it can in varnish-y tanks and old hoses and carb components), but I do firmly believe that it's the popular scapegoat for every 'running' problem anyone encounters.

This is like one of those what type of oil should I use things. I'm not going to give advice or tell you what you should do, ill just tell you that I have used it for years, sometimes used dock gas that does not have it other times filled up with pump gas. I have never had an issue. I keep an extra filter with me but I have never had to use it.

What do you use? I can't tell you how many times I've gone to the back yard only to find the barge, john boat or one of the canoes has been trampled beyond recognition. It's really getting old, and what's worse is my insurance agent says one more claim and they'll remove my elephant rider.

Good question, no such thing as a bad question if you are concerned about an issue, they are just having a little fun with your post bud.

The only years I have ever had to cleanup snowmobile carbs were the years that my brother in law decided to dump stabil in the tanks. Your milage may vary, but I have only had issues with Stabil and none without.

Just don't get caught in the rain.

Or eat health foods and only drink champagne.........

It sounds like your 93 octane contains ethanol too? Around here it doesn't, that's what I run. At any rate, fill her up and go boating....... Seafoam is my additive of choice. Goes in my boat, classic car, snowmobiles, lawn equipment etc.......

I don't doubt there was a problem. If it was Sta-Bil related in any way, IMO it would have to be because of a 'dosage' issue.

Stabil will go bad also over time so if he used old stabil he had sitting around for a decade, it could cause problems also. I've used stabil for quite awhile and never had problems with it. I imagine if it did gum up carbs, more people would be talking about it.

I'm sure he's just hunting down the "Marine Rated" dealers in his area.

Maybe he's tracking down a lime & a coconut?

I don't use any additives, my spare gas dosen't sit that long & being from "sunny California" my boat doesn't sit more then two weeks at a time.
