About to sign a check - model year differences?

Hi,

I just closed this week on a new Alumcraft Navigator and 07 90hp Yamaha F90. The sales rep called this AM to tell me the boat I picked is already been pre-rigged with an 06 Yamaha 90.

He says they are completely identical, and has offered a slight discount (About $300).

Are these motors indeed exactly the same?

He also mentioned that 04 and up Yamaha 90hp, for whatever reason, actually produces 100hp at the prop. I have found nothing anywhere to verify this. Not that it matters, but any truth to this?

Thanks!

welcome to iboats. not that familiar with 06 & 07 Yamaha, but i would want a bigger discount. even with '0' hours on the engine, it's is still a year old, and has depreciated. more than $300.

Didn't Yamaha drop the model year designation? Here's the article --

Yamaha Drops Model Year Designation on Outboards

Powersports Business
Tuesday August 30, 2005

Yamaha Marine has eliminated the model year designation on its outboard motors, a move which may "help reduce the inventory control situation Yamaha's builders and dealers have faced in the past," according to Kennesaw, Ga.-based Yamaha Marine officials.
Yamaha Marine President Phil Dyskow said the move means the "unnecessary burden to match the boat model year with the outboard model year has been eliminated" for boats packaged with Yamaha Outboards.
"On some products, such as automobiles, RVs, airplanes and most boats sold in the U.S.A., a formal model year designation makes sense because most of these products change from year to year," Dyskow said. "Historically, it was common for outboard models to feature new components or changes once each year. However, improvements in outboards thanks to today's new technologies often means outboards usually do not change a single specified date.
"It has become obvious to us at Yamaha that the model year designator for outboard motors no longer brings significant benefit or advantage to the table for the consumer."
Yamaha also says model year designations for outboard motors unfairly affect an outboard's value for the consumer during model year transitions.
"When a dealer placed an order during certain times of the year, it was possible that the dealer could take delivery of boats and motors packaged together with model years that do not match even though the boats and motors are brand new," Dyskow said. "And worst of all, this inventory could include outboard models that are identical with the single exception of the model year designation."
The last digit of the model number for all previously built Yamaha Outboard motors identified the model year code. For example, the "D" in the model number F150TLRD represented a 2005 model year Yamaha Outboard.
The removal of the model year went into effect with all Yamaha Outboards produced from April 1, 2005, forward. As a result of this change, Dyskow strongly recommends that all boat builders and dealers manage their boxed outboards in inventory in a manner that effectively recognizes the order in which they were received.

No, they didn't. All they did was take a specific model year designator off the engine. Model years are determined by serial number range instead of the old model number designator. Every engine has a model year designated to it before leaves the manufacturer warehouse. So, in theory, two engines, both produced in April of 06 with the same model number, with consecutive serial numbers, could wind up being different model years. The determing factor is when they are sold at wholesale. Just for giggles...If the manufacturer sells an engine to a dealer after August 1st (or whenever their model turnover occurs) it becomes the next model year regardless of when it was manufactured.

Also, you won't usually see a discount on a previous year model engine. Every year engines go up in price. So what you usually see on last year's model is the same price that it was...Last year. Lot's of exceptions to that of course. A dealer could be in a fix and need the cash or simply have one or two leftovers kicking around that they are tired of having. As an industry, most dealers would buy leftover models when available and get an extra discount. That discount is usually not passed on to the consumer. And that's why the manufacturers love not having a model year designator on the engine. No leftovers to clear out.

I don't know if outboards are the same as cars. but it seems to me when you go out the door with the 06 you have a 1 year old used motor.I think an apropriate discount should apply.
Why not go over to the used outboard price guide and see what the high end price is on an 06 used.
100 hp at the prop sounds like gobble de goop to me when they make statements like that you need to say to him why and show me the specs or company statement.
That statement would make me wonder about the guys
believeability.
