Yeah I figured that would get you in here....
LOL

anyway, how many of you have ever been blasted by huge wake waves, or a power-down bow wave, while in a canoe, kayak, or very small fishing boat?

I once was sunk by a 21 foot Bay Liner that sped to just 100 feet off my port side. I was in a 10 foot John boat,
with canoe paddles, and was anchored while fishing.
The Bayliner dumped the throttle from about 35 knots to zero knots when he saw me and kicked up a good 3 foot bow wave.
There was nothing I could do....
My friend and I watched with much anxiety as the wave seemed to grow as it approached :% lol
We tried to lift anchor and turn into it, but there was not enough time.
WHOOSH
over the sideboard it came and we floundered.

A blatant abuse of larger vessel power if you ask me :|

Then, the guy in the bayliner freaked out or something and took off, leaving us and our Flotsam and Jetsam bobbing in the water about 100 feet offshore.
( a much more unforgivable offense )

It took us about an hour to get her back in to shore and we lost a lot of stuff.

To this day, I always look suspiciously at BayLiner owners LOL

Ever been swamped?

Tell us about it.

Re: Abuse of Power

Yes as a kid in a 12' john boat (over 35 years ago) . Had a heck of a time trying to flip it back instead ended up swimming to shore (about 200 yards) and towing the boat.

Hence my sentiment that a nice deck gun should be an option available to boaters.

Had a rogue wave on Lake Michigan hit us in a 43 footer. Took on about 500 gallons of water. The pumps were working overtime. scared the bejesus out of us.

Where ya'll gettin all them big boats? 10ft Jon 12ft Jon???

1988 8ft pollywog.
Two of us floating around in a little cove on American lake trout fishing.
We are about 20ft off shore.
Here comes 21ft Bayliner WOT right at the edge of the cove.
They make a port turn then slow down in the middle of the lake to watch the waves hit us.
They got us twice more before we could get to shore. .)
The last time we were on the bank and they just flew by and kept going.
About a minute later we this BIG BANG!
They caught a "Clearly Marked" submerged tree stump.
We went back out to the edge of the cove and cheered them on <:)<:)<:)

Re: Abuse of Power

big ol cabin cruiser passed my on the river last year. i was ancored and she went by quite close, just above plane. my 16' speedboat handled the first wave quite well. it was the second one that got me. i just scooped that one up, just like a spoon with my open bow trihull.
i wasn't close to fillin up and i wasn't scared, much. was pretty amazin to see all that water go rushin donwn the center of my boat twards the bilge. the girlfirends eyes got pretty big though. she wanted to know what we was gonna do..... it's like, well, i think now would be a good time for the bilge pump to be put into action. it worked well.....i really couln't falt the cabin cruiser. the river just aint real wide in some places. so hopefully i'm prepared for this kind of thing to happen. at least aware that it can happen as there is no where to run...it is a eyeopener though....:)

Re: Abuse of Power

I once had my Hatteras almost sunk ..... just kidding. I like the deck gun idea Bob! Even just a 12 gauge with slugs would discourage most people! I hate to admit it but I was almost the sinker once rather than the sinkee. I bought a very used 24 ft Valco jet boat when I fished the Kenai River a lot. There was a bend in the river where there were a bazillion snags to get hung up on. Most people that fished the river a lot knew they were there and would fish farther down the river. Anyhow I was going down the river fairly fast when I rounded the bend and there were boats stretched almost all the way across the river trying to unhook snags. I didn't really know what to do so I spun the wheel and gave it the gas. I did a great 180 turn and as I hit the gas I looked back just as I drenched 2 guys in a small boat with the huge rooster tail the jet kicked out. I couldn't hear them but I could read lips and sign language! I felt horrible but at least it wasn't cold out!

Re: Abuse of Power

The whale watching boats that run from Provincetown,MA to Stellwagen bank always manage to terrify the small boaters from Herring Cove to Woods End with their 4 foot waves.Especially the "Sunset Tour" which comes back after dark. They come racing in at 25 knots and you better be out of the way...

Re: Abuse of Power

Ahhhaa, just remembered my best boating story yet.

Huge tanker went by us far awy, but somehow a huge wake was kicked up. My dad saw it and tried to get the bow into the wave but the forgotten anchor line messed up his turn and kicked us sideways. The wave pushed us right into another boat and did a small amount of damage to his boat. Our boat bilge was full with water and no bilge pump (my dad was cheap). Heading back in to the dock, the lower unit blew out, only had idle speed.

What a fun day boating.

Re: Abuse of Power

My friend has a sea plane license... And while in training for it, he was going down a river, with trees on both sides. Came around a bend while taking off, not out of the water yet. Found a canoe with 2 guys in the middle of the river, directly in his path. He managed to get the plane out of the water just in time, but carried a ton of water with him, and drenched the 2 guys.

Met up with the guys(by chance) further down the river, and the 2 guys were greatful! They said that was one of the coolest things they've seen, and they were happy as they hadn't had a bath in about a week(they were on a trip).

Re: Abuse of Power

Back home when young, knew a couple of jerks with big motor on little boat who thought it funny to ski passed fisherman in jon boats and spray them with wash from skis. Apparently, two fisherman had be sprayed before as when the skier passed one cast his devils horse 3-treble hook lure into his back and off the skis he came. Reeled him in and cut the hooks out of his back.

Now that is catch and release, real story,
