Accident waiting to happen?

Colorado, like some other states, have had instances of West Nile virus, carried by mosquitoes.

Lights started flashing, when I read a local news article on how the County Health Dept. wants to release "several tankfuls" of Gambusia (mosquito fish), into ponds that do not drain into other water sources. Gambusia are supposed to eat a considerable amount of mosquito larvae.

It is important that the pond do not drain elsewhere, since this fish can/will wreck native fisheries (their quote).

Is seem that it is entirely possible that these fish could somehow, either accidentally or purposely, be introduced into other local waters.

I am researching more on these fish and will contact the local newspaper and FWS.

Seems like a stupid idea getting more scary.

Marty

that is scary, whenever "intelligent" government get involved in short term solutions, with long term unknown consequences.

Is this one the native americian fish that lives in the southeast? If not they are about to realy screw something up. BTW small catfish, bream(sunfish) and a couple others do a job on sketer larva w/o causing too much harm.

I think I remember reading years ago that wading birds can carry mud containing fish eggs on their legs and spread them to other waters. Nothing in nature is fool proof, no matter how much we think we know about it.

Jack has it nailed. Wading birds, any birds will and can carry fish eggs to other ponds, streams and lakes. Bad Idea to introduce these fish into the area.
