Accurate points timing

My 1974 15hp Evinrude has got points based ignition and I understand the timing is set by getting the points gapped correctly. This leaves me with the following questions:
1. How accurate is this?
2. Does a wider gap give advanced or retarded timing? (If would much rather go retarded than advanced to play it safe)
3. Is there any way of checking the timing once set?

Re: Accurate points timing

Timing is set by the rotational position of the stator, though it is affected by the point gap also.

Set points at .020" gap and leave them there.

Your manual will guide you in setting the linkage and synchronization of the throttle position and magneto timing.

Good luck. :)
