Re: Acetone

I know it wont hurt the fiberglass but it may not do much for the glue. Depends on the glue that was used. It certainly wont hurt to try it.

Re: Acetone

Not much glue left on a 23 year old boat when i pulled up old carpet. I want to paint sides,(will not have carpet) and a gray carpet on floor with cream white seats.

Re: Acetone

Acetone WILL eat the fiberglass. you may not see it disappearing, but it is.

Don't believe me? Wipe acetone rag on the gelcoat and then look at the rag. Got white all over it, doesn't it...?

Won't see it as well with clear fiberglass but same thing is happening.

Re: Acetone

I know mek Methyl Ethyl Ketone works really well for eating the glue but not sure about the gelcoat.

Straight MEK? I wish I had known that before I had used a dual-action sander on my car and my boat...:(

Use a cup brush on an angle grinder and it will eat the glue up

I was doing that today. But it was digging into the glass to much, so I went softer on it. I got most of it.

Yes read that with clarity....sadly no chemical will let you wipe away glue..actually acetone flashes for to quickly aka its gone in a flash..Man up get the grinder out and have at it

Oopps try gettting a 6" adapter use 36 grit paper and then have at it...;)

Acetone won't harm the resin or gel coat, at least not when used in this manner, if it helps to remove the glue its OK to use.

It is easy to tell if it is. Just look at your rag and see if there is any of the resin/gelcoat on it. If not, keep at it.

I try not to hit any one spot for more than a swipe or two. Keep at it too long and you will see your fiberglass appear on the rag, and your nice glossy coat may be dulled a little.

Dont worry about Acetone on your gel or your glass.. Acetone Will not hurt/attack it in Any Way. If your nice glossy coat is affected with an acetone rag..then its just wiping away some crap stuff and not the gel :)

Try the acetone on the glue and see if it works..some glues react to different solvents but Acetone on poly Will not hurt Anything..

I dont see how a brass or other wire brush as Bob said would dig into the glass..unless its bogus glass.

Id do the same as Bob said .. wire brush on a 4.5" grinder ( using ear muffs and safty glasses ) 30 min your done..

If you decide to do with solvent..then shave and wear a respo !.. gloves etc. ( wear a respo/ears and eyes no matter what :) ) .

Re: Acetone

Another chemical option is a stripper containing methylene chloride. That chemical will eat just about any paint or adhesive.

Another mechanical option is a flat wirebrush on a rotary drill. May take a bit longer than an angle grinder, but is less likey to eat up the glass.

Re: Acetone

I used a cup wire brush and grinder on my deck... I also used MEK where I couldn't reach with grinder. Make sure and use a respirator with any solvent!

Re: Acetone

Try a heat gun and putty knife. It should get most of the old glue up.

Re: Acetone

Try a Pinstripe Removal Disc it will supposedly take off the glue with out clogging and wont
be too harsh on the resin. Never tried it before but its suppose to take off the tape and glue
with out hurting auto paint.
