I have a 06' 19ft Four Winns with a 4.3L 190hp Mercruiser.

Last Fall we changed the oil by hookin up an old bildge pump to a hose, and attaching the other end of the hose to the hole where the dip stick goes in.
The bildge sucked all the oil out of the oil pan and pumped it into a bucket and worked very well. The reason we did this was because in this boat, there is no way to reach under the motor to the drain plug in the oil pan.
Does anyone have another way of changing the oil, or a way of getting at the oil drain plug in the pan?

The oil filter is also very difficult to get at. We did not changed it because we did not have the tools last fall and now I would like to. There is only about 25 hours on the boat.

My question is, is there an adapter for this mercruiser motor so you can mount the oil filter somewhere more accessable and make changing the damn thing alot easier?

My old boat was 17 years old and alot easier to work on, they seem to leave less room in the engine bay in the new boats.

Thanks alot for the help everyone!!

Yes on both counts.....
You can buy a special pump that will suck the oil up through the distick, that is reusable...
Mine is made by Stearns.....
Yes there is a remote oil filter kit available for just what you need.....
I'd wager you would be able to find both of them right here on iboats....:)

Yes, your Mercruiser dealer can get a Merc remote oil filter kit designed for your engine. But if it's that tight to get to the filter, it may require an engine pull to install the remote filter.

Is it necessary to change the oil filter after 20-25 hours, I changed the oil but could i just leave the filter till the next oil change?
If I take the oil filter off will all of the oil drain out or can I change the filter without having to change the oil?
Thanks.

No, but highly recommended

"All".......no, but depending on how the filter is positioned, you're going to lose some and have a mess in the bilge since you already said how difficult it is to get to.

Re: Adapter for Mercruiser

Talked to my dealer and they said $425 for the remote oil filter adapter,
plus 2 hours installation at $70/hr. so around $570 installed.
Am I getting ripped off or are these adapters really expensive?

How do the dealers change oil filters on boats without these adapter? when there is no room? do they have a special tool that fits under the engine?

Thanks.

Re: Adapter for Mercruiser

you could find one for less BUT it will bolt right on the motor with NO extra LABOR ;)

Which if you NOT doing it DIY is a big issue

Labor , at 2 hours sounds fair - the filter kit
with 2 adapters and 2 hoses is $230 -250 -
try I-boats parts dept. 1-800-914-1123
If they don't have one - Basic Power will.

Edited at 7pm
Called local ships store - complete kit $175

The nice thing about the factory kits, is they come with the brackets to mount everything right on the engine.

HOWEVER

You can get a remote oil filter kit at any auto parts store, and save yourself hundreds. You will just need to decide where to mount it. Any flat surface will work.

Re: Adapter for Mercruiser

A remote filter is the only way to go. I am not sure on the 4.3's maybe someone will chime in here that knows for sure, but on the Gen V & Gen VI Big Block Chevy Engines & All GM Performance Parts 454 & 502 crate engines use two of these bypass valves. Location for oil filter bypass valve is adjacent to oil filter nipple on oil filter mounting pad, Location for second valve (For oil cooler bypass) is above oil filter nipple in block on filter mounting pad. If a cooler is not connected to the oil cooler ports on the oil pan rail, the second valve is not needed. Engines using a sandwich adapter between the block and oil filter to connect a remote oil cooler must use GM # 25161284 oil filter bypass valve (in the location adjacent to oil filter nipple) to compensate for higher system backpressure. These are like $3 at the dealer.
