Add a grease fitting to steering cable?

I see that there are adapters for about $23.00 plus ship/tax to put a $3 stainless zerk grease fitting on the steering cable (Teleflex brand). I was wondering if I could carefully drill a hole in the metal jacketed part of the cable near motor end and thread/epoxy in a Zerk grease fitting? Anyone try this before? I think the cable has a metal inner liner, right? I would like to avoid having to pull the spiral wound core out before drilling.

I think Mark's intentions were to save the dollars, and opt for a more economical solution.

Drilling a hole in the existing jacket would seem risky, in that any damage to the inner core could be an area that leads to the entire assembly seizing premature. Counter-productive in this case, in that your goal was to extend cable life.

You seem to be quite meticulous Mark.... proceed with caution and I bet you'll be fine.

The advantage with the item DJ pointed to is that it also includes an integral lip seal to keep moisure/debris out, and grease in.
