Add overheat warning light?

After having my engine (1989 Merc 5.7 Ski) blow an impeller, overheat and then blow the head gasket, I am wondering, is there a way to add a warning (idiot) light? I don't want the whole noisey warning horn system, just a light that came on at, say 200 degrees.

Don't you think that NOISEY warning buzzer has a purpose?

Why do you think it's called an idiot light.

If the buzzer only came on with an overheat, that would be fine, I just dont want it making a racket everytime I start the engine, which is frequent if you have skiers in the water. And I presume the light would be a simpler, less costly solution. The problem is that if you don't physically look at the gage all the time, you don't know if there is an overheat. A light added to the instrument panel, which I can do, would get the driver's attention within seconds. If I knew how to find and install the correct sensor on the engine and still have the temp gage output, I can handle the rest.

By the way...the buzzer systems only come on when you use the key, if you have an oil pressure switch installed. If you wire a temperature switch to the buzzer (and splice a light to the wires), the buzzer will only sound if you overheat!

Definitely the way to go...sound and light.

Now that makes sense. Anyone have part numbers for the buzzer and temperature overheat sensor?

You can get the complete kit right here on iboats:

http://www.iboats.com/Cole_Hersee_M...732873450--**********.752316947--view_id.3876

You will be getting the oil switch in the kit, but you don't have to use it...although I'll bet that you eventually install it!

This kit is less than the individual Mercury parts would be (I paid almost $60 for just the temperature switch from Mercruiser)....

Happy boating!

Actually it's quite easy to add a light for each alarm sensor (if installed)

The over-temp switch is simply a switch to ground. You connect it to a buzzer and a light. When the switch is actuated by the over-temp it goes to ground and illuminates the light and sounds the alarm.

You NEED to keep the buzzer because the lights are not always easily visible in direct, bright sunlight...(I usually pull skiers in bright sunlight (warm days etc....)

You can also do the same thing for each sensor. (oil, drive lube, etc.) I am planning to have a separate light and buzzer for all three of mine.

If the buzzer only came on with an overheat, that would be fine, I just dont want it making a racket everytime I start the engine, which is frequent if you have skiers in the water.
The (low) oil pressure sensor will always sound the buzzer when you turn the key on (because there's no oil pressure until the engine turns)

So if you want the buzzer not to sound when you start it you can separate the the sensors from the buzzer circuit so low oil pressure won't sound the buzzer....

I don't know which is worse though........popping a head gasket due to over temp or spinning a rod bearing, breaking a rod and driving it though the side of the block.......but hey....it's your boat...If you want to disable the alarms, it GO FOR IT!

Well, 30 years, 2 boats and over 1700 hours without any alarms, anything will be an improvement. Can't disable what I haven't got yet.

Re: Add overheat warning light?

Wlll I won't argue there......my last boat went 39 years without an oil pressure event (I always made sure that it had an adequate level of oil........ Imagine that!!!)

You could easily just disconnect the alarm from the oil pressure switch and use it with the temp switch (only) then you'd have no oil alarm while starting but you would get one if it overheated.

Radio Shack has simple piezoelectric buzzers that would work great. You could also wire a simple relay in there that would prevent the oil alarm from buzzing while you're cranking.....There's a bunch of ways you could wire it up.

Here's some examples... http://www.radioshack.com/search/index.jsp?kw=buzzer&origkw=buzzer

It ain't rocket science.

If you just want an "idiot" light then use a temp and/or pressure switch and wire it to an LED like someone suggested above.

Rick
