Now that this motor runs right, I'd like tilt and trim. Can you order a retrofit kit or bolt the engine to a later model mount? When I first got this engine, I thought the tilt bar that you can manually swing up into place while lifting the lower unit from behind the moter was for either towing or shallow water running, but I could not start the motor in that tilt position. What is that tilt bar for? Will these older motors run in the tilted position or are the carbs designed for straight up running only?

SCO,

They'll run in a tilted position. If it doesn't, you have another problem. Pinched wires perhaps?

The '73' had an odd and rare tilt/trim set up. I'm not sure if a later model clamp brackets (tilt/trim incorporated) will retrofit.

Other than that, your only other solution may be a set back tilt/trim bracket from CMC.

I had searched and found the CMC, and for that price Id be better off selling this engine and getting a newer model I think. Thanks though. Djohns, I didn't know that t&t was available in 73. That's an interesting lead as I might be able to find a junked motor with it. Tilt and trim is hydraulic isn't it? I wonder If I can just engineer a hydraulically actuated cylinder to replace one of the impact shocks.
