Picked up another boat yesterday, sort of buy accident but it seems to have a lot of potential.
I went to an estate sale/auction and there were several older boats, mostly wood and mostly pretty rough. There were quite a few new old stock Evinrude motors as well but all were 1969 to 1972 Hydro Electric motors. Not being too keen on owning another Hydro Electric motor and already having too many boats, I watched each one go up and get passed over with no bids. At the end of the sale, they grouped all the remaining boat motors and the one fiberglass boat in one sale and I was the only bid. It went too cheap to ignore.

The boat looks to be a 1965 MFG Edinboro, I went to the MFG web page through Fiberglassics.com (http://www.fiberglassics.com/mfg/mfgb65009.jpg) and the Edinboro of that year is the closest match with the only discrepancy between the brochure and this boat is that my windshield is glass and not plexiglass. The boat looks to have been shrink wrapped for a long time but there was an electric dehumidifier and several large desiccant cans inside. The motor is an electric shift 50hp from about 1969, which is most likely toast, it appears to have had a major short as all of it's wiring is melted. The hull is in great shape with the only drawback being several dozen screw on snaps about the outer gunwale rails for an assortment of soft tops and an enclosure. There is also a hard top that is on a pallet that came with it, I'm not sure yet how it mounts but it's marked MFG and looks about like the one shown in the brochure. The soft tops were wrapped up with the hardtop on the pallet. It was apparently put away in storage with the intention of preserving it but it's not a mint boat by any means. The floor is rock solid, as is the transom. There was some water lying in the forward deck area, up by the foot wells but there was a recent tear in the shrink wrap and I assume it sat out in the last rain storm just prior to this sale. When I looked at it, it was already inside a warehouse where the auction was held.

It's also super light. The trailer its on is barely towable, an old well neglected and rusty looking Tee Nee with tires so rotted that they're gummy and sticky and look like their melted to the rims. It should be good enough to get it home with a pair of new wheels on it and some grease.
I'll most likely just take my car trailer and winch the whole thing up on the trailer for the ride home.

There are a dozen or more motors, all are Hydro Electrics, several are new, the rest just super clean looking. I have no idea on their condition other than cosmetic appearances are either new or like new. Since I paid far less than even their scrap value, I can't get hurt. My main concern really is the boat.
The more I look, the more I like the boat. If it's as solid as it seems its most likely a keeper.

I'll just have to sell off a few of my other pending projects to make some room.

I may just hang one of he hydro electrics and hope for the best, I suppose a good 65hp or so would work fine on that boat. It measurs 16' 6" long and being as light as it is, 65 HP should do fine. I suppose a 40 or 50 would move it too. When I first looked at it, it was sitting too close to a wall to see the starboard side, I was able to grab the left trailer wheel and slide the whole boat and trailer out sideways with very little effort, so it's not that heavy, even with it's motor. It's got a metal kickstand type tongue jack, it's a spring loaded leg that swings down under the tongue. The bow stop is super low and it's got an old electric winch and a battery mounted to the tongue.

It has no title, but its got PA registration that last expired in 1972. I don't believe PA had boat titles back then. I do have a notarized receipt from the auction house describing the boat and trailer and the fact that it was an estate liquidation sale. I should be able to get a title with that info with a marine inspection here. I don't see any hull numbers, there's a tag of some sort up under the splashwell but it looks like the steering cables have rubbed it smooth. It's got a double pulley steering cable routing that uses a center mounted bracket and two counter balancing type pulleys. I suppose its what the brochure means by 'Low feedback steering'? I'll most likely just put in a teleflex steering system.

Might anyone have an info or opinions on this model? I'd be interested to know a bit more about these boats. I've seen a lot of MFG boats around over the years but this is the first one I've owned. It looks to be a pretty cool boat, lots of freeboard, plenty of interior room, nice seats, solid floor, moderately sized splashwell, and excellent hardware.
