Adding a circuit on an old Wellcraft

My Father-in-Law, great guy and recently widowed, and his bud are cleaning up his ancient Wellcraft for fishing excursions. I was drafted to tune/service the old Lark II and that is done. Yesterday he asked me to help him install some gunwhale lights up front and in the stern, using a double-throw/on-off-on lighted toggle switch. The idea is to have some colored down lights inside so he and his bud can see their feet and the deck after dark. I put in the lights, red in front and blue in stern, but have no experience with lighted toggle switches. All the ones we see here on Iboats are 4-pole, 5-pole, etc. I can wire a simple double-throw toggle switch with 3 poles cause I used to help my uncles with their Model A/T resto projects, but more than a 3-pole switch throws me. Can someone post a simple diagram showing me how to wire a double-throw, lighted toggle switch?...the fewer poles the better. I am visually oriented, so a simple hand-drawing would do. Don't want to order a switch with a diagram we can't understand.

Re: Adding a circuit on an old Wellcraft

Thanks for the link. I can wire a simple 3-pole on-off toggle switch, but that's not what my FIL wants. He wants a double-throw illuminated toggle switch...throw the toggle up and get down lights up front, throw the toggle down and get down lights in the stern. Need a diagram for an on-off-on switch.

T'wer my boat, I would go with two separate switches.

Point being, I can easily foresee a need to have both sets of lights lit at the same time.

Something like this...I'm by no means a graphic artist as you can see{lol}, the drawings are supposed to represent front/side and back views :redface:...
the light inside gets it feed by the throw
top pic - Single pole double throw
bottom - double pole double throw
{just incase ----load = accessory, feed = pos+}
Hope it helps!

Thanks guys...that's just what I needed in HopeSheFloat's post. As for seeing a need to have both front and rear down lights on at once...it's not my boat and not my choice...just trying to help him get his wiring done. I can give you his address if you want to drive to E. Tejas and argue the point.

Yep, it's his boat, he can have it anyway he wants it. I just hate to see someone do something silly.

Anywho, I pointed it out, my conscience is now clear and satisfied. :)

Whats silly is believing there is only one way to accomplish your goals
