I have a 1988 chaparral 5.7 and electric senders, wiring and gauges work fine. When im driving i spend almost as much time watching oil pressure and coolant temp gauges as i do watching where im going. Problem is when im wakebording i cant. I broke a 350 block almost in half due to excessive overheating. I was behind boat when it happened and my friends just are oblivious to these things. I need an audible warning system to retrofit to my boat. Help please

Re: Adding a engine temp/oil warning buzzer

Not sure which brand of 5.7 you have, but they are probably similar. The temp and oil pressure buzzers are usually done by a secong set of senders on the engine, one next to the temp gauge sender and one next to the oil pressure gauge sender. these senders are more simple on/off rather than the variable resistance that the gauges need.

Soooo, you could get yourself the senders (assuming your engine does not have them) and an alarm buzzer and wire it all up. the engine mfg'r may also have a kit to perform this upgrade, so maybe check into that.

It has a junkyard rebuilt shortblock, edlebrock intake, penta risers, and omc accessories and cobra drive. I could tee the oil pressure and use the extra port for temp. Where can i find these senders i wonder?

Here ya go -- simple and cheap. buzzer from Radio Shack. This diagram when created assumed the warning light was being added to an existing horn. However this diagram also represents one way to add a separate horn, light, or both to your boat. Standard, grounding type oil pressure and temperature SWITCHES not SENDERS are used. Senders are resistive devices. Switches are either on or off (closed or open circuit).

This is good. Ive seen Normaly open normaly closed air pressure switches before. This will work. I n/c oil pres and n/o temp at 220 and get it done.

You want those switches to CLOSE (not open) at low oil pressure and high temperature. These are the same switches that worked the idiot lights on cars with no gauges.

something you will come across is where to put them. low oil pressure can....T.. off oil psi gauge sender... Or down by oil filter. (easy enough)

(not sure for this one though)..Temp warning Down off the heads. If they fit due to manifold clearance ?... or off the intake somewhere. If your running a on board heater off the motor you run out of places to put it. ask how I know. Still working on that one.

I bought this http://www.iboats.com/Cole-Hersee-Marine-Engine-Warning-Kit-Warning-Buzzer/dm/view_id.3876

I wonder if its in the head that it might be to hot
