Occasionally someone does a search and finds my posts on adding a tell-tale, then PMs me on what to do. I never did get good pictures the first time around. Well, here I am doing it again, so I figured I'd take some pictures for anyone else wanting to do this.

This time it's a '76 85hp, and it has the convenient casting boss on the side of the #1 cylinder.

Procedure:
1. Center punch the boss
2. Drill pilot hole with . . . well something smallish.
3. Enlarge pilot hole with 11/32 bit.
4. Tap with 1/8 pipe tap.

Fit with either a 1/8" threaded bronze nipple, or the OEM fitting.

Pictures of the location ensue.

Re: Adding a tell tale to a V-4 Crossflow - and call for others

Tashasdaddy thought this would make a good FAQ. I would tend to agree IF I can include some other engines besides the v-4 crossflow. Lacking a better place to do so, if you folks have pictures, diagrams, or whatever for some of the other models, especially the 3-cylinders, post them here. I'll see what I can do about putting together a write-up.

Also, what years did OMC start putting tell-tales on particular models?

Would this also be a good way of putting a temp sending unit or is the wall to thin??

The 50HP, 65HP and 70HP telltales can all be set up according to Service Bulletin 2276. The OEM fittings listed can be used on most engines, including the V4 and v6 models.

I'll put a jpg copy below, but you will have to enlage it with your picture program to read it easily:

Thanks, Ezeke.

Still collecting . . .

Does anyone have a good picture of the fitting that goes through the cowling? Preferably w/o hose and w/o the nipple installed. I'd take one myself, but I broke a clip on mine and it's held in with a dollop of 4200. Not the sexiest picture for a FAQ.

Here's where it's living for now.

Still need info on the inline 2s and some part #s for all the OEM fittings. I'll look 'em up eventually. But if someone already has them handy.

That bulkhead fitting limits the flow and keeps the water pressure up inside the powerhead. W/ just the hose, you're probably losing a little pressure.

And thanks again ezeke. I added the fitting to the write-up.

Still evolving.

See if you can get our Monday morning catch in there somehow. That's my brother-in-law, Joe O'connell, holding a 42 inch striped bass that came aboard at 7:00.:)

Nice, so do you tap the outlet hole right on top of the port gill?

Exactly- don't you just love irrelevance?

Actually you put the hole right where this factory one is:

Be sure to coat the drill bit with Venezuelan Beaver Cheese to catch any gill rakers that fly off in the process.

More pix - more better.

I may or may not use them, but some choice is better than none.

My engine is a 69 Evinrude 85HP. I'd imagine from reading this thread the red circle in the picture would be a place to add a tell tale?

Sure looks that way.

Wonder if that plug is already the right size. Maybe it was used for a water-pressure gauge.
