If you tap a hole in the same place, a temp sender can be installed BUT you need to make sure the length of the temp sender does not strike the cylinder.

Yeah, this will hopefully be a great post! I still need some good pictures of a 3 cylinder tell tale tap location.

Iwombat my 78 model 85hp should be setup like the powerhead you have pictured in the first post in this thread correct? It's food for thought I am mechanically inclined but that would sure suck to scar the cylinder wall by drilling into it by accident or as Silvertip said striking it with the sending unit. Funny I was thinking of how to add a temp sending unit myself at one time.

Your '78 is probably tapped into the bottom of the exhaust cover, and I'm not sure if that boss exists on a '78. It's a totally different block.

It's pretty obvious when you hit the void. But yeah, messing up would sure ruin your whole day. Personally, I think it's best to remove the head anyway. That way you can see what you're doing and make sure the fitting doesn't bottom out against the inner wall.

Would you want a picture of my power head/top half of the motor? I can get them to you possibly tomorrow.

I'll take any pictures anyone wants to send, especially if you can get the lower cowling pieces in the shot.

Here is one picture of the boss on my motor. I looked the motor up on http://www.marinshopen.se/guide/guide.htm as a 78 model motor. I'll get more picks tomorrow, how old would you want to go on the motors, I have a 57 model 35hp johnson.

I think it's beyond the scope of the FAQ to cover everything under the sun. I think I'll keep it to the more common late 60s to 70s doubles, triples and v4s.

The 1978 and 1979 V4 motor's factory telltale had the fitting on the right lower section of the exhaust cover as shown on wildmaninal's pix. The picture below shows what is behind the opening.

The hose should be routed to the top of the engine and back to the outlet fitting to keep air out of the cooling system if that position is used.

Here is a better picture of mine for those of you with the same year or newer (78 +) whom like me didn't know it already has it on there I admit I didn't know. It will also give you a general idea of the hookup. I guess I need to check the hose to make sure it isn't clogged with ants or anything else. Iwombat I guess you could use this pick to show those whom aren't sure of the year of there motor that if you have this you don't need any extensive drilling and so on lol.

wild, you may not have caught it, but like ezeke suggests you probably want to re-route your hose to keep air out of the cooling system. Just get a few of feet of 5/16 hose and re-run.

It should leave the block and go up over the block, then back down again to the cowling bulkhead making a big upside down U shape. The way its run now you're just putting air into the cooling jackets.

Oh yeah I seen it but I might half to move angle of the fitting (turn it 90 degrees or less from the bottom of the power head) on the fitting to a different position right? Correct me if I'm wrong. I get what you are saying. It's defeating the purpose like it is now. I don't know if you caught that under cowling pic I added by the way.

Just caught it, thanks. It's a keeper for sure.

Ezeke, or anyone else have a pic of a re-routed tube? I'll probably add a section for mods to early tell-tales as well.

Still need:

Pictures of the powerhead outlet locations on 3-cylinder and 2-cylinder.

Info on the years the tell-tales began to appear in different models. I know '78 was the V4's first. Was it on all the rest too?

Here's a shot of the factory routing on the 1985 100HP V4:

Re: Adding a tell tale to a V-4 Crossflow - and call for others

Looking good Iwombat. I just wished I didn't put my greasy hands all over the motor while working on it it would have made for a better picture :D . It serves the purpose though. It's really a clean motor for it's age, I have seen worse. I just hope the motor is of good service to me, I would buy them all day long for what I paid for this motor. The gold on the motor is one reason I don't want to change the gold paint on the boat when I go to paint it because motor compliments the gold flake paint. I may paint the boat back original, candy apple red flake, gold flake and white. keep up the good work.

Okay, I have a volunteer for some three-cylinder pictures.

Anyone want to step forward for taking some pictures of a 2-cylinder block?

Re: Adding a tell tale to a V-4 Crossflow - and call for others

The 1/8" ID OEM outlet elbow is (P#321886 0r Sierra # 18-3290).

Hose can be 321887, 913435, or 327721.All of these OEM fittings with the 1/8 interior ID accept 3/16 to 5/16 ID hose.

Hose is 321887, 913435, or 327721.

327721 is 3/16 and comes in a 28” length. That's ample to re-route the exhaust housing hose on the V4.
