Hi Newbie here, adding electric start to a 30 hp outboard. I've included electrical diagram I'm using . Wiring in the existing stop switch (from the tiller handle) and adding a kill switch seemed pretty straight forward (black to black, black/yellow to black yellow leads already prewired on the motor).
I bought an aftermarket start switch with black and red leads while diagram shows red and red/yellow leads. The diagram assumes I'm using an 8 pin plug which I'm not, the outboard had none to begin with. Red/yellow lead from start switch ends up on the solenoid according to diagram, red lead ends up at a symbol I have not been able to decipher. I'm assuming the the red lead in the diagram is for the black lead on the starter switch and it is ending up on the ground? not sure

All I can help you with is relating this to a basic starter wiring similar to say automotive.

A 2 wire starter switch has a hot (positive +) wire coming into it. Which in your case is the 16GA RED GXL wire coming from the larger solenoid terminal.

Once you turn the key or push the button it completes a circuit sending the positive juice to the smaller terminal of the solenoid. Which in your case is the 16GA YEL/RED.

In NO WAY does a wire from a starter switch connect to a ground, it would be an instant short.

So with the above info from your wiring diagram I would connect your switch wires red to red and black to yellow/red. No need for any components in between (other than maybe a plug connector).
