Hello all,
I just stumbled across this forum while looking for information on adding an electric starter to my 20hp. I would like to know if adding a starter is something that can be handled at home, with regular hand tools.
Thanks for your help.
Greg

absolutely! youll need pliers, a wrench or two , maybe some sockets ,and some screwdrivers. if you need to cut any wire, some strippers would be handy(not the girls)

starter, selenoid, push button switch,4 guage pos + batt cable, 4 guage neg - batt cable...

thats what youd need as far as hardware....
you didntmention what year your motor is, but some of the older ones didnt have teeth on the flywheels, they had the pull start on top of the flywheel, if this is the case , youll need a different flywheel

let us know what year and model your motor is and we can offer more assistance

m ikey

if i'm not mistaken that's a 1982 motor, you will have to come up with the mount brackets, starter, solanoid, inline fuse and switch. You can also add wire to the kill switch and extend it to the front of the boat for remote operation, while you are at it you might as well get the solinoid and bracket for a electric choke.

Hello Bass Runner,
Thanks for the information. Is the electric choke connected to the electric starter in any way? What happens when the motor starts and warms up, does the choke shut off?
Thanks again
Greg
