adding power tilt and trim

I want to add power tilt and trim to my 1974 70hp johnson
is this a striaght forward job looks just to be swapping out transom brackets

Yes and no. What trim/tilt unit are you looking at? Trim/tilt units on 1974's were RARE.

I'd say look into an aftermarket CMC kit.

The tilt and trim was introduced during the 1975 model year. You can find the description on various 1975 and more recent models. The systems were sold as a kit for use on earlier motors but were/are not listed in the OB Accessories until 1975. http://shop.evinrude.com/
