Adding PTT

Well, add this to the hundreds of other posting about this....
I have a 1991 40hp evinrude that I have acquired a power tilt/trim unit for CHEAP. It supposedly functions properly so I would like to get it on the boat. I have a few questions. One, how do these units come on and off, and the best way to get the pins out? The lower one has a nut on both sides, does it just "pound out" like the upper? What hold the upper rod in? Second, what is the best way to wire this up? I know I need to setup some kind of relay system, but right now at midnight I can't seem to wrap my brain around the concept. Maybe you all can bump it in the right direction. Thanks!

We need to know what type of TNT unit you have. (ie do you know what model outboard it came off of?) If not, what colour wires are coming off the top of the trim motor? By your comments I assume you have to remove this unit from another outboard?

Some of those friction pins can be a real bugger to say the least. You will need a fairly heavy sized sledge hammer and a punch to drive it out, not to mention a quality penetrating oil.

Yeah, I know they are a son of a gun to get out....There is no danger of damaging the actual mount for the motor by pounding those out? It came off of a J48ESLCER I think, I was having a hard time reading it. It is a two wire motor. I do not have the complete outboard for the TNT unit though, just the mount. Thanks.

So I assume you did not get any junction box or relays with it then? It is hard to wire without, but can be done.

Is this correct? Would there be any down side to using this method. I don't want to over complicate this, but I want to make sure it isn't cobbled together and that it's done right. (Not to be confused with doing like OEM). That thread was a bunch of help. Thanks!

I have never personally seen that method used. It does look like it would simplify things. Hopefully Ezeke can guide you.

Ok...Thought I would finally wrap this thread up.

I finally got the upper pin out. Mine was threaded and a slide hammer worked very well. I ended up having to buy a motor and seal kit for my used unit to get it to work, but I am proud to say that after I put the seals and motor in, it works like a champ!

I just finished wiring it in. I chose to just use a DP/DT toggle switch that is rated for 50A. My manual says it is only supposed to draw 20A max, and I have the power wire fused with a 25A fuse. This system was quite simple and much cheaper to use for me. I have not seen this method mentioned on here, but I see no reason it isn't safe. Feel free to convince me otherwise. If anyone wants to know exactly how it's wired in, feel free to PM or reply to this and I will do my best to explain/find/draw a wiring diagram. Thank you very much to everyone that has helped me in this "adventure". I plan to put it in the water this weekend. Wish me luck.
