i have a 1985 Johnson 70hp and i would like to add Tilt and Trim to it.
I would like to find a used one but i am not sure what years will fit and what models are compatable.
it appears from the OMC site that late 70s to early 90s 60hp -150hp range will fit but i am not 100% sure.

Are they easy to install?
is it a "on boat" bolt on installation or do i need to disassemble the bracket to add the unit?

Re: Adding tilt and trim

Somewhere around here is a lively discussion where a guy put a CMC brand (I think, or something like that) on his boat. Has pics and his engine is an older 50 hp Merc to help you fine it. Anyway you might look around and find it and contact him.

It's here, (probably not) or in the Merc, outboard non-repair, or boat discussion forums and the latest entry is within the last few days. If I find it I will come back and tell you.

Years ago I bought a '72 125 John and installed an OEM tilt on it (didn't have trim then). Bought it from a dealer (in the carton) and it was easy to install. OEM PTT shouldn't be much more difficult.

The CMC brand does look pretty good but pulling the motor and remounting it does not look like a simple bolt on project.
i have a feeling a may have steering cable issues with the CMC if i move the engine back 5-6" too.

i do like the look and construction of the OEM unit too.

Don't get me wrong i don't care if its a simple project or not but i do like the OEM look and function

I found what I mentioned to you. Go to the Props Forum and look under a thread titled "Proper Engine Height". It's right at the top right now (Thursday 9 am). In there are pics of the whole thing.

That does show it pretty well.
i don't see how the steering hitches on that one.
Mine goes through the center of the tilt hinge tube.
i can picture the cable getting bent at a pretty steep angle to be able to get to the my motor plus it will be moving up and down with the motor at the steep angle.
i am concerned about the movement causing stress and wear on the cable.

The CMC unit looks like a good unit.
I think if i had an motor that they did not make a good OEM tilt&trim for that would be my #1 choice but i think i could pick up an OEM one used in good condition or rebuildable for less $$.

Re: Adding tilt and trim

Talking about steering cable binding. My current boat has a hole in the deck right at the transom. The steering cable came through that hole and made an abrupt turn get into the tilt pin tube (like you said). Steering was horrible so I replaced the cable. But upon replacing I ran it across the deck rather than under it and through that hole so as to keep a nice smooth flow.

So, you are correct in preserving the integrity of the cable while persuing your PTT.

Re: Adding tilt and trim

Hi guys, I have a little experience in this problem as well, and like texasmark, it kinked my steering cable when i installed the CMC unit. I didn't like the thought of a steering cable binding, so I put a longer steering cable on with a loop in it where it came out the side of the transom to solve the problem (had to install new steering anyway, put my motor on a different hull). I do agree that an OEM TnT is the way to go if you can find one. I just installed a unit out of an 89 60hp on a 79 V4 85hp and it bolted right in place. Plus then you don't offset your outboard back 6 inches with the resulting change in setup height to get performance correct.

Re: Adding tilt and trim

I've purchased 2 OMC tilt and trim units on Ebay for my 70 and 115 Hp and had very good luck doing so. They're up for auction there all the time and sell for anywhere between $150 to $250. Get a 2 wire motor on if you can. Unit for engines from 1978 to about 1994 will fit your motor. Sometimes you can find the complete upgrade kit. Runs about $900 though. You'll need to find a relay control box for it too. See them regularly on Ebay as well. Or you can just build your own like I did.
