adding trim and tilt fluid-1986 Mercury 90hp side fill

My trim and tilt slowly goes down but has no leaks. This morning I decided to top off the fluid. I raised the motor and locked it in trailering height. I bled off the system and then opened the fill spout on the side of the bracket and topped the oil off until it ran out. It did not take much. I ran the motor up and down a couple of times and the unit did not seem to work as it should. Once again I lifted it into trailering position and locked it. I bled off the pressure and opened up the fill cap only to have it puke out most of the oil in the unit. Maybe I got it full of air somehow. How would I go about bleeding the air out of this system? It is a three-wire side fill.

Ok, never mind, I figured it out. When I stopped bleeding it off before opening up the fill spout the problems went away and it accepted fluid and the rest went smoothly from there.
