Ok, so my 1996 88 special has just the round rectifier on it and I have burned up a battery in one season from the voltages going north of 17 volts while running for long periods at high rpm's. So i found a voltage regulator off a used johnson that the guy at the marine store says will work on my motor. the one he has is the kind that is water cooled that bolts up kinda under the flywheel. the present charging system on my motor is the 6/9 amp system. I was wondering if this water cooled rectifier/regulator will work. I will get the actual part number today. I dont think it is the "kit" # 173640

That 88 "special" was just that. OMC made a bunch of these 90 hp engines, less some expensive parts. Called them an 88. Basically the same engine as the 90. Ran just like the 90's. Your 88 does not have that regulator, (rectifier only) does not have an oil/mixing pump and may not have had power trim. All to sell the engine cheaper. Keep in mind, your engine has a different stator, a 6 amp stator. All units which had factory trim had 3/9 amp stators and water cooled rectifer/regulators. Due to that difference, I'd probably call Bombardier's help line to make sure you get the correct water cooled regulator part, based on your stator capacity. They are in Waukegan, Ill 1-847-689-7090. They are around $120.

Sierra may also have a suitable regulator.

If it's not to pricey the 173640 kit will work good on your mtr.
