Re: adding voltage regulator

CDI Electronics parts are made in the U.S., most carry a 2-year warranty & are backed up by the best certified Tech Support in the industry. Our certified Tech Support is free to anyone if you buy our product. Manufacturers "S" & "M" do not offer certified tech support & their parts are made in Germany & Mexico.

And none of the other guys offer comprehensive troubleshooting guides, through 28+ years of research, like we do.

As for your overcharging issue, check our guide on this:

Battery Charging Issues, Regulator-Rectifiers and Tachometers

Most charging issues & regulator/rectifier failures are a result of improper battery type and/or battery charging neglect. That guide will detail what type battery is recommended for outboards & why.

If your engine only has a 3-post rectifier, that means the battery is having to act as its own regulator, which places further strain on the battery. Definitely replace it with a combination regulator/rectifier. Our part# is 194-5279 List price is $158.00. We sell direct or you can purchase through iboats.

Re: adding voltage regulator

Thanks, very helpfull and interesting. I have some understanding of this. I bought good old Merc that sat for long time. I bought dva adapter and flywheel removal tool. First the swithcbox was bad. Replaced it and it was ok.Then a phantom problem. All tests showed ok but it still acted up. Finally removed flywheel and found bad insulation and corrision on wire of the trigger, right where it attached to the trigger. Replaced that and the stator just for the fact that i was allready under the flywheel. Motor has been running like a rocket for a couple of years now. And when i first got involved the rectifer had a bad diode and i replaced that too! But i just put in the standard merc one at the time. Hind sight is perfect.
I will recheck and test this weekend if i make it out. And you dont have to sell me on CDI. I was very happy with the switch box i bought. And i think the stator is from them too but not sure?
Thanks for all the help. Joe
