Adding weight to the bow .... Q's

OK i allredy know that I have too big of an engine on my boat.
14 ft glasspar spot lido. With a 50 hp jhonson. Mid 60's ? ( should have a 25 -30 hp)


Any one ever added weight to the bow of there boat?

With out a cement block and the battery in the bow. If i would walk to the back of my boat the bow would raise and any amount of wind would whip the boat around. But with them im good. Im thinking of adding a sand bag insted of the cement block.

Also with a passenger or two i wouldnt need them.

Any comments are welcome.

Lose that locomotive and put correct power on that boat, TT. Otherwise you are jeapordizing your life and those of anyone dumb enough to go out with you.

Boats have weight limits as well as power limits. Overloading the boat cannot correct for overpowering it.

I had a 40 hp on the back last year with no worrys what so ever.

The 50 weighs about 35 ish pounds heavy

You have a 35 pound 50 horse motor? My 9.9 is over twice that, given it is a four stroke, but still. Also, it's not just the weight that is an issue. Too much power affects control, planing and about a billion other variables, including all around safety. I'm not going to tell you what to do besides be careful...

The power rating on a boat has very little to do with hang weight of the motor, it is rated for the torsional load the motor puts on the transom under way, you have doubled what the transom was designed for.

That is the problem you need to correct.

Advertise on Craig's List for an engine swap. You should be able to find someone with a 35 hp who wants a 50 hp. If they're both in good condition, a straight-across swap would be a decent deal for you. Focus on Johnsons and Evinrudes about the same period as yours and the swap would be easy.

You aren't going to fix the problems with your current setup, and you'll break something before long if you don't get that 50 off that boat. Could be your head.

IM Just going to take the 50 off and stick the 40 back on it. I have to make a transome jack to make it work. But the 40 was lighter and we tubed with it before.

Cant get rid of the 50 need it to power a differnt boat. Just have to find a junk 25-30 and fixer up


And no i wanst saying that the 50 is 35 pounds. Thats crazy talk. I was saying it was about 35 pounds heaver than the 40 hp.
