I need an adhesive recommendation. I'm connecting a white pvc pipe to my fiberglass boat. The pvc is going to be the vent for the bower. The PVC needs to be attached to the vent intake of my boat which is fiberglass. The finished piece is going to be covered with a shroud when its done so color is not an issue.

Re: Adhesive Recommendation

3m5200 is marine and actually has a tiny bit of give to it. Epoxy would not and may not adhere to pvc too good.

Re: Adhesive Recommendation

You should use an adhesive sealant like 3M 5200 or 4200.

Just remember that 5200 when fully cured will form a bond that is stronger than fiberglass. If there is any chance you will need to remove the connection in the future then you should use fast curing 3M 4200.

I've never used 5200 before. The PVC seams very similar to fiberglass. There is not a lot of surface area for the adhesive to grab. There is the thickness of the boat (maybe 1/4 inch) around the fitting.

5200 is great stuff. Home Depot carries it, Lowes does not.

Is this a vertical connection with the PVC pipe coming up through the fiberglass? If so then I would definitely use fast curing 5200. The regular 5200 takes a long time to cure and tends to sag a bit in these situations.

I've used both for a lot of applications and they work very well.

Wrong.

The stocking of 3M 5200 appears to be a local option. I live in central FL and have purchased 5200 from a couple of different Lowe's stores in Gainesville, but have not seen it stocked in their Ocala stores...40 miles apart.

I have never seen it stocked in the local HD stores in Ocala...haven't looked for it in the G-ville HD stores.

I've found it in both (caulk tube at HD and Lowes, and caulk tube and squeeze tube at HD) stores here in Southern Maryland.

There a lot of good adhesives out there. It sounds like you have, not much to glue to? look around on internet, check out ciba adhesives, we used that brand some time ago. Have not looked in on them in a while, may have what you are looking for

PVC is an amorphus material and is a relatively easy to bond thermoplastic to gel coat on FRP. You're dealing with 2 separate plastics properties, both of which have different (dynes ) surface energies which dictate the quality of a bond. But, in your case, use the readily obtainable Marine Tex "Flex Set" for no more adhesion that you'd be doing with those materials.

5200 will bond with the PVC and fiberglass. This will create a strong, water-tight seal that will likely outlast the floor in your boat. 5200 has the adhesive and sealing qualities you need.

How does flex set differ from 5200

Flex Set is more expensive? ;) Honestly I've never used Flex Set but I have used the 3M products and they never let me down. You have a relatively simply seal to make here and 5200 is more than sufficient.

Re: Adhesive Recommendation

Ok, I went with the 5200. We'll see how it holds up. I have to wait a week to do any more work on her and to see how strong the bond is.

Here is a couple of pics of what I ended up doing.

Made the holes 3" not 2.5". The vent hose is 3". The previous vent hose was not even connected to the outside of the boat.

I had to install a PVC elbow because the vent hose could not make that tight corner.

Can/did you get a bead of 5200 between the boat and pvc on the inside?
