Adjust carb float, pliers?

I read everywhere that the carb float should be parallel when upside down and in the manual mentions around 1" of droop when rightside up. If these settings are off, how do you adjust? Bend the bracket with pliers? That is the only thing that is not clear in the super secret file.

I bend the brass coming off the float. Pliers would be fine but I normally use my thumb and press against the work bench. Best of luck. Rick.

Rick:

thanks, it doesn't say anything in the shop manual that I can find.

I am still trying to figure out why my 70hp burnt out the middle piston (done by the previous owner.) The carb was pretty clean, but 2 of the 5 mid/high speed ports were blocked.

Blocked ports will lean it out, no?

I use a small straight screw driver in between the float arm and body, it acts like a fulcrum allowing you to bend it, the metal is thin and easy to bend.

Certainly, I guess I am surprised that it could be the cause. I am trying to determine the root cause of the failure. So far I have the waterpump was rebuilt incorrectly missing ALL the o-rings and the tell tail was weak when I bought it. Now I see that some of the carb ports were clogged.

Maybe insufficient cooling plus the dirty carb caused the middle cylinder in my 70hp motor to lean out and overheat. The exhaust side of the piston was melted.
