Adjusting idle on 2002 90 Johnson 2 stroke?

It's turning 1200 rpm's in the water and right around 2000 on the hose. My old 90 had a screw to adjust the idle, cannot find one on this motor. Anyone know how?
I also noticed that after running on the hose for a good 15 minutes and feeling the heads with my hand it did not feel warm. Is it possible that there is something wrong with the thermostats, causing the high idle? Thanks for any help.

You're right stretch, there is no idle adjust screw. One of two things I can think of.The trunion nut under the cowl on the throttle cable is in need of adjustment or the cam roller on the throttle linkage needs adjusting.
Is this some thing that just happened or has the cable trunion been moved? If not ,the linkage may be binding or in need of lubrication.Check to see that the timing plate is against its rubber stop when engine is in nuetral. Also insure when engine is in nuetral that the throttle linkage cam roller is on center with the scribe line on the throttle cam and "just touching."If it's hard against it ,it will hold the carb flaps slightly open.
If engine seems cooler than normal while running on hose one or both of the thermostats may be stuck open. This in turn could cause the high idle you are experiencing by keeping engine in quickstart mode due to it running cooler. Also a defective temp sensor could cause the same however on that late of year model it is unlikely the sensor is bad already.Hope this helps.

If it is a 60 degree engine, with carbuators, the idle is set with the timing, Quick Start needs to be checked, link/sync, then boat in water in farward gear final adjustment on idle with timing. Air leak. Some of the 2000/01 engines came from factory with trash in the carbs.

I inspected the all the linkages and everything seems to line up correctly. Everything moves very smooth and the carb flaps do close all the way. This problem didn't just happen all the sudden. The rpm's have slowly increased over the past month. In gear it idles normal, around 700.

Funny you mentioned trash in the carbs. With about 20 hours on the motor, I lost a cylinder. Took to the dealer and one of the carb jets had a piece of paper in it.

Thanks for the info. I guess it's time to visit the shop again.

How many rpms in water out of gear, after warm up? Quick Start should hold rpms to about 1100, until warm up then drop back to about 850/900 then about 700 when shifted into gear.

Rpm's always stay the same. Doesn't matter if it's been running 1 minute or 5 hours. 1200-1300 out of gear, in the water. Guess it's not getting warm?

stretch,is the timer base all the way against the rubber stop while running in nuetral?

It takes 105 degrees F to turn off quick start and drop the rpms from 1100 rpms to idle. Locate the white/black wire on port temp sensor and ground to block, if rpms drop temp sensor is bad. The other things that causes problems with Quick Start is wiring harness and power pack.
