i was adjusting my shift cables per mercstuff.com directions and forward went off without a hitch.... but reverse directions state to.
1 w/shift cable out of bracket place in full rev.
2 pull out on the end of shift cable as far as it will go while someone spins the prop ccw until the prop stops.

the prop never stopped!?! and the cable pulled smoothly and it says if the cable does not move smoothly replace it. i'm not quite sure what to do. thx!

Ayuh,.......

Are you saying that it will Not shift into reverse, even when Manually shifting it,..??..??.....

That tells Me,.... You've got Other Issues down stream from there......
Will it shift into reverse by Hand when the outdrive is Off the boat,..??....

Ayuh, :)......If it will shift into gear with the drive off, then you will need to perform the test that isolates excessive play in the shift shaft & it's other associated components as outlined in chapter 1C in manual #6...
Most likely it is worn where the shift crank contacts the shift spool.....;)
