adjusting shifter cable

If I take both cables off I can put it in either fwd or rev. When I adjust them to what I think is right it does work while I have it on a water hose. When I put it on the river there is no telling what is going to happen. I have tried doing it at the river, but no good ever comes. Right now, I have a good fwd gear and no reverse. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please tell us what make, year, and model engine/outdrive you are talking about.

it is a 79 mark twain with a 305. it has a pre alpha mercruiser sternd drive.

I almost have it I think... There is a problem though. On nut "B" where it shows there to be a slot for adjustment at this site http://mercstuff.com/images/shiftcable.jpg <br />there is no slot. I only have a straight bolt and single holw. Any suggestions????
