Adjusting throttle/ idle settings on 50 Merc

Hello,
I would like to know how to adjust my throttle/idle/timing settings on my 50hp Mercury. I had a friend show me last year, I do know there's a sort of rocker device with adjustment screws that controls each setting. The other day I knocked the rod that connects the throttle out of its housing and that might have put everything else out of whack, as I can no longer get the engine to idle (it will only run with the throttle cracked slightly and cannot get the prop in gear)

To illustrate this I took a pic this morning and numbered each adjustment screw, see the attachment. Could anyone familiar with this engine explain what each one does - and if there's any diagrams or literature I can download that explains this. I was surprised to see my Mercury manual does not include this at all.

By the way, this is a 2001, 3-cylinder 50 HP Merc for a Bayliner 160. Not that I would expect it to change radically over time, but doesn't hurt to mention it.

Re: Adjusting throttle/ idle settings on 50 Merc

Would like to help you with your dilema, especially with the name you have. I just finished doing the timing and link and sync procedure on my engine, but it is an 86 60hp 3 cyl. Your unit is a bit different and don't want to make assumptions that might be deleterious. On mine one setting is for max spark advance, one for WOT stop so shutter is not providing the stop, one is secondary spark position and one is idle adjust. Looks like there might be a fourth adjustment on yours also. Looks like another adjustment behind (towards the engine) from #3 in your pic. Hopefully someone with updated information will come along and help. JR Hodge
