Re: Advice buying a used boat

Let the adventure begin! My old truck, a '94 Ford Ranger, 6 cylinder, 3.0 has had a very slow leak in the transmission for quite some time. However, while towing the boat home yesterday, I noticed some smoke coming from under the truck, so I pulled over and looked, and the transmission was dripping fluid slowly and hitting the exhaust. Uh oh! But I occasionally pulled over and checked the fluids until we made it home. After that, I put a box of cat litter under the tranny, and checked it this morning. I only saw about 4 drops of fluid. I checked the fluid levels, and added a 1/2 quart of fluid, and the levels looked ok.

I asked my step father about it. He's a big gear head and once owned used car lot. But, he's not the most wordy guy on the planet. Here was his response:

"The truck is not made to tow a boat unless you and have an extra tranmission cooler and it still may not do the job. When fuild comes out the seal it is getting to hot and to much pressure in transmission and the weak link is the seal."

So, I need advice. Do I keep this truck, or should I trade it in now. If I do trade it in, what should I get. I'm a frugal guy and refuse to buy new. And, I live within walking distance of work. Even though I don't walk it, if I get a bigger gas guzzling engine, it's really no big deal for daily use. It won't eat up my wallet, and every now and then I'll budget in a trip to the lake.

But, I don't know what to get, how do I know if a vehicle is rated to tow my new beauty?

Thanks as always,
Neil

well anything besides a full size truck will need a aux cooler wich is 30 bux and very easy to install and depending on a family type of thing you could look at a used jeep 2004-2007 will run you 4500-7000 with a lot of extras well atleast in my area. F150s will carry there value awhile so a 04 05 would be around 5k chevys and dodges will range an extra 2k of a ford. I like a basic f150 v8 or v6 and any jeep with a v6+ will work or strait six is even better way more torque. but those are what im looking at upgrading to and what i see will tow for the cheapest price

Brewern I think any decent suv or 1/2 ton truck (f150-1500) type truck should be fine for your new baby. I would add a tranny cooler to any suv. The jeeps are nice vehicles, the one you posted will more than tow your boat but won't be very good on gas. If your ranger is generally in good shape and you like it I think it is ok to tow your boat, just fix the leak and add a cooler. But if it's worn out or you just want a better vehicle than no better excuse than the new boat needs a better tow vehicle. Just make sure the wife likes it so she doesn't get mad at all your new toy buying lol.

Thanks Ryan, my wife has always wanted a Jeep, so maybe this is the time.
Anyone have any concerns about this one?

Re: Advice buying a used boat

I just bought a 19' monark fish and ski with a 200 johnson (HEAVY!!) and I drive a 04 ford ranger with the 4.0 v6. It pulls it fine but I wouldn't recommend pulling it long distances just because of fuel. My truck is a manual and has 4:10 gears with 4x4. I don't know if I would try it with anything less. BUT that boat is pretty heavy IMO. the trailer is extremely well distrbuted and it has surge brakes. If you have an automatic or 2wd I would definatly be concerened for pulling it out of the water. I am from KY as well and a lot of ramps around here are very long and very steep. expecially at the big "C" because of the water level. so that is something to definatly keep in mind.

Neal nice boat!!!!!

Sorry i couldnt help you out i had work issues that came up over the weekend......

I figured you would come home with it. Congrats and Happy Boating!

Sorry to here about your truck.... That boat just might be alittle on the heavy side for your truck. like others have said a full size truck would be the best. Im a chevy guy but any of the top brands would do, half ton 4x4 would work great on the steep ramps you all are refering to.

I have used a chevy trail blazer 4x4 v-6 to pull my boat in/out of the water with no problems.

The Craigslist quest begins again..........

Good luck to ya Neal!

Thanks Checkmate and everyone else here. I'm looking into several options, with the same zeal I had when looking for a boat. You watch, I'll find a gem for a great price. More to come... (and goodbye old Ford Ranger, you've been great!)

I'll post pics of the new vehicle when I find it and buy it.

Re: Advice buying a used boat

It saddens me to sell my good old 94 Ford Ranger.
But, it seems a 99 Durango is about to enter our life.

Good bye old gal.

Re: Advice buying a used boat

The boat is bought. The new vehicle is bought. All that's left is selling my old truck.... and going to the lake!

Here's the new ride to haul my girl:

The math:
Boat: $1500
Durango: $4000

Selling old Ford for: $1600

$3900 for whole package..... so far!

Thank you all SO MUCH for your advice and guidance.
I'll post pics from our first trip. (I might Photoshop the pic of the first fish I catch.)

Re: Advice buying a used boat

We had our first trip to the lake this weekend and had a great time. It would have been better it the rain and cold would have stayed away, and been even better if the engine didn't start making a new noise! (See my previous post if you know engines!)

Anyways, here's the pictures. Thanks again to everyone here that helped us choose our wonderful boat!

We received our lettering from:

http://www.custom-vinyl-lettering.net/

I learned about this site from friscoboaters SeaRay restoration thread. They are the cheapest I found, and they mailed the order the day after I ordered. The quality is top notch. It was $38.03 for the name and the registration numbers x 2.

"A Dog's Life" will be cruising Laurel Lake this weekend. :)

ahhh laurel! One of my favorites! Its a beautiful lake and one of the cleanest i've seen. If your not familiar with the lake head on over towards Grove Marina (assuming you put in at Holly Bay since its the closest). There are some rocks to just off of and a rope swing that can be a lot of fun. I have been spending a lot of time at Cave Run lake this year to get away from all the crowds. Seems like Laurel has been getting more and more busy everytime I go down there. If you go to cave run make sure you keep an eye out for the channel markers and stay towards the main lake. There are a lot of stumps and really shallow rocks that can end your fun reallllly quick. Have fun and be safe!

Thanks for the tips. We'll definitely be hitting Cave Run this summer, probably next trip.

Here's some pics for you Aquaman. Yep, it was a very rainy weekend at the lake.
Holly Bay campground was packed, and we weren't prepared for the rain, as the pics will show. But, oh well, rig a bunch of tarps, crack open a beer or 3, and enjoy the weekend!

I hope you and yours had a great weekend too!
