Re: Advice needed: Fed up of this anchor need a new one asap
Most of the time I would be anchoring in calmish waters. I anchored today again, this time i had a mask on, watched how the anchor reacted with the chain on it, I do agree with more chain. I'll get 15ft of chain on it & see what happens. the boat is a fishing/rec type walkaround. Would not be doing much overnights
Highestgrade - you ain't living up to your name. You upgraded to an anchor that is at "ropes end" of securing your 30' boat. I just checked the Danforth website, and the 14lb standard anchor can hold boats up to 31' in 20knot winds. A definition of 20/23 knott/mph winds: "Fresh breeze small trees in leaf begin to sway; crested wavelets form on inland water." Let's hope that's the strongest wind you ever see on the water or else your anchor will be over-matched.
You state above that "most" of the time you would anchor in "calmish" waters and not "much" overnights. For the safety of your family and/or passengers, you need to plan for that 5% of the time that the waters aren't calmish and/or you're anchored overnight. That's one fine time to be worrying about why you didn't drop the cash on a bigger anchor. You dropped it on a 30' boat, do it on the anchor, chain, and rope.
I'm being harsh to help you realize that buying an anchor and using just enough chain and line to get by is a recipe for disaster. You need to plan for the 1-5% of the time when conditions are rough, your main motor is fried, and you're heading for rocks with your kids on board. What kind of anchor do you need now?
I also think that you need to learn from someone else who owns a Danforth, about how to properly set and retrieve. Half of your problem is in the sizing of the equipment you keep purchasing and the other problem is in you. Find someone you know, someone at your marina, or someone online to go out for a few hours to help you practice the proper way to use the Danforth and secure your boat. It'll pay dividends when you least expect it!
