I agree that the anchor flukes (the pointy things on either side) are bent/misaligned from motoring the anchor up. First of all - stop doing that. :)

Depending upon what type of bottom you'll be anchoring in, I would recommend a Fortress (FX-11 or FX-16 for your size boat). I use the FX-11 with 6 feet of chain, and I set everytime, first time, and it has never release when I didn't want it to. If you don't want to pull it up manually, either invest in a winch, or get and learn to use an anchor ball. My wife, who weighs 108lbs soaking wet, is in charge of anchoring, and the Fortress is great. Lightweight, and when I use the anchor ball, she just has to gather in the rode, and then just lift the anchor from the surface of the water to the deck. She loves it.

Since i've been using the danforth, everytime i set it I have nothing to worry about. Still i would like to add some more chain on it but haven't got the time yet.

The chain is there to a) help the anchor set quicker, b) absorb some of the 'pull' from sea conditions, c) get the anchor down quicker.

If the amount of chain you currently have on it is doing the job, all you're doing by adding chain is adding extra weight you have to pull up. I'm not a firm believer in the 'chain the length of the boat' philosophy. I use a Fortress and 6' of chain, and have never had a problem (22' boat, Gulf of Mexico).

I've read this thread twice and I can't determine where you are using your boat...care to share?
