Hello everyone,
I am new to this board and new to boating so please be kind. I purchased a 1991 17.5" Dynasty w/ a 1991 135hp Mercury Black Max V6. This motor has been giving me problems from the start(about 20 days now. Purchased from a Marine). The first problem was a hesitation when I tried to pull someone wakeboarding or just get up and go(is this WOT??Not sure what that means), so I changed the H2O seperator and plugs. I'm 100% on the right replacement parts for this. This did not solve my problem, so I took it to the place that I got it from and they told me there was water in the gas. I got all the water out of the tank and the carbs. Soon after, a knocking noise started. Yesterday I was on the water and heard a loud bang, like I hit something, the boat came to a stop and died. I got the boat back to land and found a hole on the side of the lower block. I believe this was caused by a rod. I am wondering what could be the cause of this?? Could this be caused by the carbs not being adjusted correctly?? Is there anything that I could have done to make this happen? I am wondering due to the fact that I am going back to the place that I purchased the boat from tomorrow and am thinking they will try to get out of fixing it for me.
Thanks!!

sounds like you got water in the fuel somehow...or your oil injection stopped working. Do you have a fuel water separator? I think they are invaluable. Either way you are SOL (s--- outta luck) now, and i guess it's time for a new powerhead or a new motor. Your choice, your wallet.

You most likely bought the boat AS IS, with no warranty, so there isnt a whole lot you can do with the old owner...

BTW, WOT means WIDE OPEN THROTTLE. I think i replied to an earlier question you had.

I changed the H2O seperator a week ago. That was one of the first things I did.
I accidently posted this in another section.

Did you put oil in the Gas or did it have oil injection?

Was it pumping water? Your failure mostlikely happened as a result of failed water pump or oil injection. Your engine got hot due to one of the above and your rod could not take the stress. I can almost guarantee that you bought the boat as-is because it is a 1991 model. Rebuilding your block is probably out of the question so I'd go on Ebay and try to find a good used or remanufactured powerhead. Sorry to hear about your troubles, but I've been there and done that.

My $.02

~John

Well, here is my story and maybe it will help you. I am new to the board and learned alot about my problem from reading messages on this board. I purchased a 1986 350V ranger with a mercury XR2 150. This was suppose to be the original motor and it did fine for about 2 weeks. I was coming back in from a days fishing and the motor started knocking. I took it to a local marine shop and they misdiagnosed it, and did ten other things wrong but the bottom line was my powerhead had a knock in it. I ran across a motor in a local paper and the guy who was selling it was a strong mercury mechanic. He put the motor on the boat and within 2 hours, the motor seized up and destroyed a piston in it. I was disgusted with the whole scenario and researched to find another good reputable dealership. Well I found one and before they even began to access the damage, they looked for why this was happening. My motor was about 3" too high on the transom and when I trimmed it up, it was not getting enough water flow to the no 1 cylinder which is the last cylinder to get water in my motor if I understand the system. This was a problem the previous owner may have had but who knows. According to my trim guage, I thought I was ok and the water pressure seemed OK. Well,I got lucky and they fixed it dirt cheap. Here is my advice. First, talk to the shop and ask them point blank where they stand as far as an obligation to repair it. Next, develop a time frame as to how long the motor was actually used. Not boating time, but running time. If you signed a as is- where is no warranty, then what I read here is right, you are SOL. Otherwise, if this motor did not run long at all. look for a lawyer that specifically deals with bad product purchases. You have more rights than you think. You can do this in small claims court. Otherwise, cut your losses and purchase a reman'd powerhead and fix it. But before you fix it, figure out why it grenaded so it does not happen again.

HTH,
John Weaver

can i throw another 2 cents in?disengage the oil injection.have ruined a motor by them failing unexpectedly.got rid of the injejtor and mixed by hand.takes longer but know the that the oil is in the fuel. and yes would even do this to a new motot as soon as the warenty expired.
