Re: Advice needed on material for major repairs

Hey guys, question on bedding. Does it matter if I bed in thickened epoxy vs PL on this boat, one better than the other? Also since I have the stringers cut and in a jig 1/4 inch up over the hull, can i leave it in place and epoxy under it using an empty caulking tube or PL?

I it will make no difference which you use or how you do it.

What an awsome post. Keep asking questions. I am learning alot right here. I tell my students that the only dumb question is the one that isn't asked.

Thank you!! I am thinking of using epoxy thickened with microballoons?.........or should I use something else to make the PB....like the idea of making it as water proof as I can

I have always been an epoxy user. My first transome and stringers were with epoxy. Awsome stuff. I reluctantly started using poly on my project because I would be living alone and boating alone if I bought 15 gallons of epoxy. I am not quite half way through and I am a convert. Besides the price, the other big benifit is that it will set up alot quicker and you can move on with the project. The big down side is the prep work. I have been itchy for almost a year now.

Subsequent polyester resin work won't adhere & remain adhered as well to epoxy as it will if you use poly based PB, and the 72+hr off-gas & cure time for PL is the reason I am starting to suggest poly over PL for most of the project where PL could have been used.

Cabosil is what I'd recommend. Don't really need fibers with epoxy. Takes quite a bit of Cabosil to thicken the mix though. About double the volume of resin sooo... for every quart of resin you'll need about 2 quarts of cabosil, give or take.

I see no problem with this. Its just for under the stringers so the glass can tabb better in the seam.

I'd use the epoxy, not the PL

Thanks!! I just received the microballoons and cabosil to create the PB.........I have West Systems 405 filleting 406 cabosil and 407 low density...any idea of how much of each to use or does it really matter for bedding?

I use ballons for filler. Makes the resin easier to sand. Cabosil gives the resin a more structural mix so for me, I'd use the cabosil for bedding. You CAN use either I'm just stating my preference.

You can use MicroBs' or Cabosil..or a mix of the two of any ratio..

Your only using the fills to Help Bond Roll your Fiberglass tabbing..

There is very little if NO structural value to the underside of your stringer fills.

Its ALL in the glass tabs.

To use only cabosil ( hard as a rock ) for the fills on the underside of your stringers or bulkies could create too much of a hard surface on short space ( that stuff gets HOT and Expands ).

Gelcoat does not adhere very well to epoxy

Re: Advice needed on material for major repairs

Would be nice if I could sell the Gel. What will i need to do to paint the ER now as far as prime and paint, i know i will need to remove the blush and sand the epoxy along with the remaining gel......what kind, thinking of two part poly.......need to match the color, Pearl White.

As far as prep goes, same to me............grind, grind, grind, clean, clean, clean
