Im looking at a boat with a 1989 yamaha 225 hp excel fuel injected runs good . 1 dealer says good motor and all parts are still available.. 2nd dealer says good motor but he would stay away from it,hard to parts but it is a good motor . mostly fresh water use and not alot of hours. are these dependable motors when properly maintained? Thanks Scott

yes,but it cannot be fuel injected.
the motor is old
low hours on an old motor normally indicates severe neglect.
good luck and keep posting

Boston, those ignition systems on the 89 excell are bulletproof. They changed the design after that for a reason I do not know! The ECU's or CDI boxes never fail and are a great design. Just make sure you do a compression check on the motor and get all the background history. Specifically winterization, decarb etc..

Rodbolt both the dealers said this was the first year of fuel injection and oil injection together .i dont have the serial # and the owner says its definitly fuel injected .it has 187 hours and the owner says it has not ever given hin any trouble starts first time ,no coughs or spluttering . i know its an older motor i would think it would be good for at least 300 hours even if just used seasonaly. thanks for the input

Re: advice on 1989 225 excel

I will bet anything the annual maint has not been done and its a neglected motor. 187 hours in 15 years is almost neglect. rubber parts fail with or witout use. wristpin bearing tend to rust unless it is winterized before each period of layup regardless of ambient temperature. I own a 1989 225 excel as well as a 1991 225 and a 93 200. the 89 has 3 carbs and is a 90*loop charged 2.6L engine. EFI in 89 was a pipe dream for yamaha.parts are plentiful. some are rather pricey.
good luck and keep posting

Rodbolt is 100 percent right, I own or have owned several 225's of the 87-89 models. Yamaha did not offer fuel injection for several years after that. They are carb motors. Great motors if they have been taken care of.

Thanks guys ,you can trust this forum better than the dealers for the right info .the deal with the motor is that its bolted to the boat and it appears that im not paying more than $1000 for the motor part .I really want the boat . is $1000 too much to gamble on with this motor .

You can part it out on Ebay for $1000 even if it isn't running.
