I have a 93 150 Evinrude and I have yet to change the water pump impeller. (I understand this should be done about every 1-2 years??)

I bought the maintenance manual and the impeller, but I got scared when I started reading the procedure for removing the gearcase etc. On a scale of 1-10, how difficut is this to do?

Thanks for any input.

About a 5 or 6. It's not hard with the factory manual. Just read each step first, make sure you have all the parts (including gasket adhesive and lubes) and the proper tools. You also might need a hand to hold the lower unit once removed and to re-install.

It is not bad at all, just looks challenging till you’ve done it once. I am not a mechanic and I just did one in the dark with only car headlights and a flashlight. The manual you bought should help you through. Lots of good stuff on this forum use the search button. On a 1- 10 scale 1 being putting gas in the tank and 10 a full rebuild, I’d say this is a 3.

All you have to do is:
1. Be patient and use your head.
2. Remove all the bolts, there is one hidden under the steering trim.
3. Remove shift linkage rod connection on that motor I believe it is fairly easy just pull a cotter pin and push in the linkage.
4. Observe how the water pump key is oriented on your shaft
5. Clean old gaskets and gunk before reassemble
6. Don’t mess the shift rod length
7. Reassemble and test

Did you buy just the impeller or the kit with the metal pump housing too?
Mac

Thanks v12Mac

I bought just the kit. As I read the manual there was a lot about replacing gaskets and making sure the motor was shifted in reverse (depending on what model it was). I'm still hesitant.

hello its not bad. if its a 90 degree motor its even easier. some of the late style OMC used a cotter pin most used a bolt in the connector block under the bottom carb. buy the kit with a new housing and all will be well. you may need new exhaust tube seals as well on that old of a motor. I load the impeller in the insert before installing the oring on the housing. the small end of the drive key faces in the same direction as the shaft rotates.
good luck and keep posting

On that 93 you should be able to split the motor pan and pull the port side half off. Then you can get to the connection real easy. Its usually not hard to disconnet the linkage, but re-connecting it can sometimes be a chore.
